Subject: I met DW!!!!!!!

I saw today's matinee of 'Major Barbara'. It's a very good production and I enjoyed all of it, but my eyes and ears were glued on DW from start to finish. He was truly magnificent. His performance was so seamless and graceful and he has great comic timing and that beautiful voice ringing out through the theatre were just glorious. It's just blows me away that this man hasn't done a play in 30 years. He looked so at ease on stage and I have to say he's very brave to do this having been away from the theatre so long.

After the play ended, I went to the stage door where 3 other DW fans were waiting for him. After a short wait DW emerged from the theatre smoking a cigar and dressed in a striped button down shirt and jeans. I was surpised to see that he wasn't as tall as I'd expected. He was a little stooped over, but he didn't look 6'2 to me. He has very lovely blue-green eyes, and his voice up close is a thing of beauty.

He seemed genuinely surprised that people were there to greet him. One teenager had him sign a Star Trek book and DW asked him what he thought of the play. The guy said that he hadn't seen the play, and DW playfully scolded him for it. That was a funny moment. I stayed in the background while he signed more Star Trek book and an 8x10 glossy from Masada. Then I approached him and as he singed my program ('To Melissa - David Warner'), I told him how great he was in the play and how wonderful it was to have him on Broadway. Then I told him how superb he was in 'Horatio Hornblower' and that I hope he gets an Emmy nomination for his performance. DW smiled and thanked me, but said with a little sadness in his voice that he didn't think enough people saw it so it would probably be overlooked. But he told me that he loved the role, the script and the cast of 'HH'.

Then DW asked me what I thought of the play. I told him I enjoyed it a lot. Then he asked me if I thought it was funny and if I 'got it', and I told him absolutely. Then he thanked me once again for my compliments, touched my arm, smiled and said goodbye. The touching of my arm was an unexpected thrill :-)!

It was a great experience all around and I urge everyone who is able to see 'Major Barbara' to definitely go. I'm planning a repeat viewing of the play and will hopefully be able to get better seats so I can watch DW up close.

Hm, some of that stuff's going right on EBay as of tonight, huh?
I think we need a birthday contingent at the matinee of the 29th. Party hats and noisemakers optional.
But a cigar? Agggggh! I'll have to restrain myself from slapping it out of his hand. It's just a reflex from seeing people die a slow and ugly death from emphasema (Christy Turlington disease) all my life.
Thanx!

Jen, I'm with you about that cigar. I felt like asking him to please stop smoking those deadly things. Just thinking of how they could wreck his great voice, not to mention ultimately kill him, made me so sad.

I was thinking we could queue up happy birthdays for him like we do for everyone else, and I can print it out and bring it with me on the 29th. Let's see how many folks will add on the bottom AND STOP SMOKING THOSE DEADLY THINGS BEFORE YOU RUIN YOUR VOICE OR WORSE!!!

I probably won't be able to go to NYC this summer; I'll just read the play and imagine him in the role of Barbara's father.

I just purchased a ticket for the August 12 matinee and the seat is front row center. Experiencing the play from there will be so much better than where I sat yesterday in the rear orchestra. If anyone plans to go that day, please let me know so we can get together.

I checked the ticket availability for July 29 and there are seats available in the left rear orchestra and the front/rear mezzanine. So a birthday celebration could be arranged....

I'm still on a high from meeting DW last night. I never imagined ever getting the opportunity to meet him and let him know how great an artist he is, but it happened. And he was so gracious and gentlemanly to boot, and he seemed to really care about my opinion of the production. It's a day I won't soon forget.

Are you mocking me??? I know who you are!!!

Of course I know, but....Our DW?????? I would've thought him too........yeah right.

Of course, I don't know much about such things because the Goddess never puts such thoughts in my head.

Okay, stop laughing.

I wish I were going to see him, but I could only go if certain other people were going and YOU all know who you are.

Who? Moi???

Right. No, I don't think so. After all, he's not like Arnie who really needs his big, fat cigars (you know what a long-term massive use of steroids can do to a man, don't you?)

Maybe he enjoys cigars for health reasons. They say that cigar-smokers inhale far less smoke than cigarette addicts.

>Of course, I don't know much about such things because

Why are you slandering me??? I never put any thoughts at all in your head. I'm like Mr. Warner... my power will only allow me to give you cheese cravings. A little Brie on a cracker, Snake Priestess? What about cheddar on a stick?

>Okay, stop laughing.

I'm trying! Hee! Hee!

Mel, if you go... I'll go with you. And I'll bring a big bowl of noodles (remember our chat the other night?)

Whoa! Did I really write that? Just how insensitive and nasty can I get...

I apologize to Arnie and to his family.

What I meant was, that with his talent, DW didn't need to strut around with a big fat cigar in his mouth to show the world oh! what a man he was! (remember that cute song from Hansel and Gretel?)

Unfortunately I think (from the last interview, where he was still just on cigs) it's that "calming the nerves" thing, which is misleading because it's more like a speedball in stick form. Cigars I think are less processed and chemically polluted than the little white coffin nails, but ah, well.... I can only help Melissa brings a big stinky bouquet to drown out the smell of smoke! I'll need to take my antihistamines before I show up for that encounter!

Jen, I'll bring a nice fragrant bouquet to drown out the cigar stench.

I was watching an interview with Jack Klugman of 'The Odd Couple' fame, whose voice has been reduced to a raspy whisper due to the ravages of cigars/cigarettes. I pray DW doesn't meet with the same fate.

I think he's had operations. And look at Mr. Fitness, Ahhhnold, who takes up cigars and all of a sudden needs open heart surgery or something like that. Aaaaack!

Oh well, maybe DW will make it to the cover of Cigar Afficionado (?) magazine. Just try to picture this: Sandar with a big Cuban cigar in his mouth!

Of course, I want him to live and stay healthy FOREVER, so I'd love to see him stop smoking.

Remember that Yul Brynner commercial? It was so chilling... On the other hand, some people like the late George Burns, seem to be immune to the worst effects of tobacco... Maybe DW will be that lucky?

BTW, how long and how big was DW's cigar? You know what they say. The bigger the cigar, the smaller... I'm just kidding. I'm sure that DW does not smoke cigars to look smart and powerful. He's far too sensitive and intelligent for that. He smokes them because he enjoys them and because they're somewhat healthier than cigarettes.

No, unfortunately DW was not showing any skin. The shirt was buttoned up except for the collar and I don't remember looking at his neck for more then a couple of seconds. The shirt was a blue candy stripe. His jeans were your classic straight leg Levi's variety and they were very faded, like they'd really been lived in.

Thank you so much for that fashion update!! Payne's girl will especially be interested in the Levi's description! (It's a long story, we'll tell you sometime, away from this board)

Yes, I know I'm sick....and you have no idea....whoa...wrong actor.
