“Michael, come in.”

The corners of Madeline’s lips pulled into a small welcoming smile as Michael took his stance several feet from her desk. “How is Elena?” she asked.

Michael met her gaze steadily, having anticipated her question. It always began this way whenever he returned from spending downtime with his mission family. “She’s fine,” he answered.

“Any progress?”

“She still refuses to make any contact with her father.”

“I see.” Madeline smiled again. “And Adam? He must be getting quite big now.”

“Yes,” Michael replied, again offering a minimal of information. “He is.”

Madeline nodded, and then swiveled her chair to the side to where her computer was and she tilted the screen so that Michael could see it. Anything more Michael had to offer about the Vachek mission, she knew, would be included in his report. She typed in a sequence and a picture of a man appeared on the screen. “Have you had a chance to review the Chandler mission?” she asked.

“I read the profile that was forwarded to the house.”

“It’s been updated,” Madeline informed him. “Lindsey was injured on the Libya mission. She’ll be out of play for at least a month. I’m considering replacing her with Nikita instead.”

Michael blinked once, wondering what Madeline was up to. From what he’d read, Chandler did not trust easily. That would make it difficult for someone with as little experience as Nikita to gain access to him. It didn’t help that Nikita herself did not trust easily. Michael’s gaze remained fixed on Madeline. “You want me to prepare her.”

The subtle smile returned as Madeline steepled her hands beneath her chin. “Yes.”

“Will there be valentine work involved?” he asked, keeping the concern out of his voice.

“Would there be a problem if there was?” Madeline asked, well aware that, with Nikita, there was a major problem in that area. Nikita didn’t like to be touched. She’d already had to be disciplined once for attacking a fellow operative who – as Madeline learned through surveillance – tried to get overly friendly with Nikita.

Michael looked off to the side, his mind assessing. “There may be,” he answered truthfully. “Social relations is one of Nikita’s weaker points.”

Madeline stood and came round to the other side of the desk. “That’s understandable, considering her upbringing. However, we cannot allow it to remain a weakness. If Nikita is to remain in Section she must be able to perform in all areas, not only as a cold op.”

“I understand.”

Madeline’s gaze softened for a brief moment, and then she was all business again. “Good. Operations and I have decided that she should remain under your supervision for the next six months. I want to see her utilized more in the field. You can choose which missions she’s used on but it would be wise to vary the type of experience she receives. I’ll expect a report on her progress with each mission.”

“Of course,” Michael answered.

Later, when Madeline had dismissed him, he returned to his office and pulled up several missions profiles, including the Chandler mission, and studied each one carefully. When he was ready, he picked up the phone and dialed Nikita’s cell. She answered only after the fifth ring and Michael made a mental note to speak to her of that.

“Yes?” Her voice was terse, challenging and hostile. Michael suppressed a sigh. He hoped she hadn’t answered in this manner when Madeline had called her in. Common sense though told him otherwise.

“Josephine,” he said, and sensed her surpise at hearing his voice. “Come in.”
