Chapter 116

“Michael,” Nikita began after he had changed and settled down on the divan. “I have something else to tell you.”

“What?” Michael asked warily seeing the look on her face.

“Adam woke up this morning about an hour after you left.”

“And?” Michael queried cautiously, wondering where this was going.

“He was initially convinced that you’d left him.” Nikita said softly.

Michael cursed softly under his breath. “How did you handle it?”

“I told him that most daddies go to work and that didn’t mean you had left him.” Nikita replied honestly. “I also told him that you owned a big company and that you had to go to work to make sure other people did their jobs and that there were no other problems.”

“Was he content with that?” Michael asked quietly.

“He seemed to be, and then Lakeisha and I distracted him over breakfast. Afterwards he wanted to go to the park, but with Willie gone, I thought we’d best come back here. Lakeisha continued to distract him with some games and a couple of stories, then we had lunch and he played quietly for a while until he tired out.”

“Is he sleeping now?” Michael inquired.

“Yes, but I have no idea for how long.” Nikita admitted.

Michael breathed a sigh of relief.

“Madame Samuelle, have I told you lately that I love you?” Michael asked, pulling her down beside him.

“Not since this morning.” Nikita said with a slight grin.

“Well, I do.” He said simply as he kissed her tenderly.

Nikita smiled lovingly at her spouse and snuggled into his arms with a happy sigh.

“Now I have something to tell you, Kita.” Michael said softly.

“What?” Nikita replied, noting his worried expression. “Is something wrong?”

“No, not now, but at the time, yes.” Michael admitted as he shifted his arm around his wife and drew her to his shoulder.

“Okay, Michael.” Nikita replied quietly. “I’m listening.”

“After our meetings today Willie, Chris Davenport, Chuck and I decided to go out to lunch.” Michael began. “We had a great time.”

“Oh? Where did you go?” Nikita asked, interested in following his monologue.

“To La Trattoria, an Italian restaurant Chuck likes.” Michael replied. “It was a nice place and maybe the three of us can go there another time.”

“I’d like that.” Nikita said. “What happened?”

“We’d just finished lunch and I was signalling the waitress for the cheque, when she spotted me.” Michael said with a sigh.

“Who?” Nikita asked

“An old girlfriend… Veronique Dansereau.” Michael replied with another unhappy sigh.

“What happened?” Nikita asked.

“God Kita, it was awful. Do you remember those traps I used up north to catch game? Michael inquired.

“Yes.” She replied with a shudder of disgust. “They were horrible things.”

“Well, I felt just as trapped as one of those animals.” Michael began. “Only this time, she was the trapper and I was the poor animal in the trap.”

“Couldn’t you get away from her?” Nikita inquired.

“No. We were sitting in a booth at the back of the restaurant and I had my back to the wall.” Michael continued. “The tables were close together and there was no other exit except by the path she used to get to me. I felt claustrophobic. It was terrible.”

Nikita smirked ever so slightly, but said nothing and let him continue.

‘Poor Michael.’ She thought. ‘I can just picture it.’

“She walked right up to me and kissed me on the mouth.” Michael said with a shudder. “I wasn’t expecting that.”

Nikita said nothing, but watched Michael carefully, seeing the angst in his face. She could tell that he hadn’t enjoyed the experience he was describing, so she decided that she wasn’t going to make any comment until he was done.

“I stood up to leave but I couldn’t get by her. God she reeked!”

“Reeked?” a wide-eyed Nikita echoed. “Of what?”

“Perfume! I could hardly breathe! My God it was sickening! I’d forgotten how Montreal society women seem to bathe in scent!” Michael said as he closed his eyes; shuddering in remembrance.

“That’s disgusting.” Nikita murmured.

“It was.” Michael agreed. “What was even more disgusting is that she kept rubbing against me like some demented cat. I kept pushing her away but she couldn’t seem to take a hint.”

Nikita didn’t say anything but her eyes watched her husband’s face carefully as he continued his narrative.

“What else did this person do Michael?” she asked quietly.

“She asked me to call her and then refused to believe me when I said no. I couldn’t believe that I actually had to remind her why and even then she persisted.” Michael replied as he shook his head in dismay.

“What do you mean?” Nikita whispered.

“Then she had the nerve to suggest that we could still see each other even though she knows… and she admitted she knows… that I’m married!” Michael said in an anguished rush. “She said you didn’t need to know…. I lost it then, I guess.”

‘I didn’t need to know?’ Nikita thought as her golden brow rose in disbelief.

“So what did you do?” Nikita said quietly.

“I told the tramp off.” Michael said quietly. “God… I can’t believe I bothered with women like her. I never want to be around anyone like her again. Unfortunately, she’s already sent her RSVP for the party and she’ll be there.”

“Why?” Nikita asked.

“I don’t want her there, Kita… God knows I don’t.” Michael replied, while turning pleading green eyes to hers, begging her to understand. “Her and all the rest. I was foolish enough when I was dating, to date women whose parents were business associates. I had to invite them to our party because if I thought that if I didn’t, their parents will be upset and that would be bad for business.”

“I see.” Nikita said quietly.

“No, I don’t think you do, mon ange (my angel).” Michael replied insistently. “That was how I felt when the invitations went out, but I don’t feel that way now! Not after what happened today! I told that tramp that if she couldn’t behave like a lady at the party that I would personally escort her off the premises and I meant it. Business be damned. If any of them upsets you I will make it very plain that their presence is no longer wanted. You’re much too important to me to let any little tramp upset you.”

“Did Willie witness this confrontation?” Nikita asked quietly.

“Yes.” Michael admitted. “So did Chuck and Chris Davenport. I told you that earlier. Why do you ask?”

“And this ‘tramp’… Veronique, was that what you said her name was?” Nikita probed gently.

“Yes.” Michael replied, puzzled as to where this was going.

“Did she dress in short, tight clothes… lots of makeup… extremely high healed shoes and fluffed up hair?” Nikita asked.

“Yes… that would be an accurate description.” Michael admitted.

“She sounds like Tawanda.” Nikita said quietly.

“Who?” Michael asked curiously.

“An old girlfriend of Willie’s.” Nikita said quietly. “Anna never liked her… called her a tramp right from the minute she met her. She was too… she was always demanding something or other from him, but the final straw was when he found out she was prostituting herself. He was very upset.”

“Oh.” Michael said. “I had no idea.”

‘Accurate description.’ He thought with a mental nod of agreement. ‘Veronique does dress a lot like a hooker.’

“And Willie saw you reject this person.” Nikita continued. “He knows you love me and I’m sure he remembered Tawanda and compared her to Veronique. Maybe that comparison and your ‘chat’ with him made him realize that Lakeisha is like me in a lot of ways.”

“She is.” Michael said. “She’s a lady. I could tell that the minute I met her.”

“And you’re right about him treating her like a sister.” Nikita said sadly with a sigh. “I’ve wanted to say something to him about that for a long time, but I knew it wouldn’t do any good.”

“You’re probably right, chérie.” Michael agreed.

“I know I am Michael.” Nikita said with quiet conviction.

“So you think what Willie saw me do at lunch today influenced him more than what I said to him?” Michael queried.

“Actions do speak louder than words, Michael.” Nikita responded quietly. “I know that your actions when we first met affected me more than any sweet lies you could have spun. You are and always will be an honourable man; and what you did today showed that to Willie, probably louder than anything you told him.”

After a few moments of silence, Nikita spoke again.

“So what is it, Michael?” she asked with a slight smirk on her beautiful face.

“What is what?” Michael said, confused.

“I’m curious. What is it about women like Veronique that attracts a man?” Nikita asked inquisitively.

Michael thought about it for a minute and then sheepishly replied. “Their flash… the sex…. ”

“Is that what you want, Michael?” Nikita asked. “A woman like that?”

Michael shut his eyes and shuddered. “I did at one time… Elena was like that.”

“And now?” she asked softly. “Would you want me to be like that?”

“God no.” Michael said emphatically as he sat up and wrapped his arms tightly around his bride. “I want you just the way you are, Kita. Now and always. No one else. Believe me.”

“I do believe you, Michael.” Nikita replied with a gentle smile on her face. “Thank you for being so honest with me. Now when I do see Veronique at the party I’ll know I don’t have to worry about her.”

“You don’t have to worry at all Kita.” Michael promised. “About any of those tramps. I love you and only you. You’re the only woman on earth as far as I’m concerned. That will always be true.”

“Oh Michael.” Nikita said with a happy sigh as she saw the love and longing in his eyes.

She kissed him then and trembled in his arms as she felt his passion rise. Unfortunately a small whirlwind rudely interrupted them.
