Chapter 16

Marco was loosing patience at this point. Working for David was bad enough on a good day. But today was not a good day. David was livid and he was taking it out on everyone around him. Unfortunately his target at the moment was Marco.

“How can no one know where she is? What am I paying all of you for anyway?”

Marco knew better than to say anything. He had been through this many times before and letting David rant and rave was much better done in silence than in any other way.

“You have the best equipment, the best agents, the best intel, the best of every-fucking thing and you can’t find one simple little thing that I ask you to find!”

David had been having a bad day with other deals that were supposed to take place the suddenly there were problems that hadn’t been there before. Contacts that were suddenly missing, a shipment of arms out of Cairo had gone missing, but the topper had been the refusal of the deal for the biological weapons that were supposed to cone out of Tangier. That was the one that had put him over the top on this day and cost the messenger his young life. Stanton had been a good man and Marco was pissed that David had killed him in rage. But Marco knew better than to say anything to this uncontrollable man.

“Do you know what’s going on today? Have you heard all the shit that is happening around me with these incompetent people that I try to give simple jobs to. Here, take this money get on a plane, buy this package with it, and then come back home. How hard is that to do? Simple. A to B to C to D, any moron can do that. But no. Not the people surrounding me. Do I have to get fucking Harvard graduates in their fucking business suits to get a job done? Cause if that’s what I got to do, then someone needs to tell me that.”

David let out a dramatic sigh but Marco knew that he was far from over.

“Oh how much more of this incredible bullshit will have to wade through today before I reach the point of just giving up!? Christ sakes! I need a drink.”

Marco watched as David poured his third drink that Marco had counted and God only knew how many more there had been. “Are you going to say anything at all?”

Finally Marco spoke, “The tip that we received on Nikita was solid. Three teams fanned out. We are still searching and expanding the perimeter. But she could be anywhere by now.”

“Have we killed the person who gave the bad tip yet?” David asked offhand.

Marco paused to make sure his tone was as neutral as possible, “It was a simple mistake by a neutral third party. I didn’t feel that any retribution was needed.”

“You didn’t feel that any retribution was needed?” David asked with a snide tone and Marco braced himself for what was to come.

“No, I didn’t.” Marco replied with a firm voice of conviction.

David paused, took a sip of his drink and then sat down lazily in one of the large stuffed chairs. “There are no mistakes in my organization. You know that.”

“I do, but this did not come from your people.”

David laughed, “You make good decisions Marco. Nice job.” David waved to a chair, “Sit down. Let’s talk.”

“So just how long have you worked for me? Eight, nine years?”

“Just over ten.”

David whistled, “Ten? Really? Time does fly, doesn’t it Marky?”

Marco hated it when David wanted to do the ‘I’m-your-friend-thing.’ “Yes sir it does.”

“You ever seen so many shit things happening to my operations like they are lately?”

“No sir I haven’t.”

“Something isn’t right. There may be someone on the inside, either that or some group has targeted me. Whatever is going on, I need someone I can trust to find out. I want you to handle it. Be my eyes and ears out there and find out what the fuck is going on.”

“I can do that.” Marco knew that keeping his words short would be the best way to make sure he got out of this room alive. David was truly the most unpredictable person that Marco had ever known. He was a total psychopath with the ability to hide those tendencies perfectly as he needed to.

When Marco accepted this assignment he knew just what a piece of slime David Fanning was, but he had no idea just how dangerous until he was already in way too deep. Now there was no getting out. He knew that from the second that he had helped Nikita that has also trapped himself in this hellish existence. But he wouldn’t have changed that decision for anything. David would have killed her in the most brutal way that he possibly could. Marco couldn’t allow that to happen to an innocent like Nikita. She had been in the wrong place at the wrong time and had ended up with David. It hadn’t been her fault. Marco knew he had made the right decision.

David’s partially slurred words, brought on by the quick consumption of alcohol, brought Marco back to the current situation, “And Marky, when is the last time that you got laid? I haven’t seen you with a bitch or talking about one since, well I can’t remember a time. You’re not a fag are you?”

“No sir. I just don’t mix my personal and professional business.”

“That’s good. You just keep women at a distance. Don’t fall into the same horrible trap that I did. Damn bitch just obsessed me with that body and face and then you wake up one morning and she’s just gone, bam! And they think they can get away with that. Pack up all their girly stuff and take off and just never come back. Well it doesn’t work that way. I own her! I have from the moment I said ‘I do’ and I will always own her. She is mine! And I want that bitch back so I can show her exactly what a wife is supposed to do for a husband.”

Marco had to use all of his restraint to stay in the chair he sat in. He knew he could reach out and kill David in a heartbeat but that wasn’t allowed, not yet. He calmed himself mentally and once again reminded himself that David’s time would come and when it did it would be Marco that killed him. But not yet.

“I’ll do my best to find her for you sir.”

“I know you will. I know you will.” Then with a laugh as he stumbled to his feet, “Either that, or I’ll fucking kill you. You know that doesn’t you Marky?”

“Yes, yes sir I do,” and Marco knew it to be true.

“Enough talk. Get the hell out! Find out where my sweet little something is for tonight. You may not need to get laid but I sure as hell do.”

Marco quickly took his exit out the door and then stopped in his tracks when he saw the young girl waiting in the outside room. She couldn’t have been more than eighteen years old, long dark hair, she was beautiful. And she smiled at him with an innocent smile that broke Marco’s heart. He wanted to grab her and run, but he knew that he couldn’t. It took every ounce of strength that he had to walk away from that young girl. He knew what she was in for tonight, and he knew that her odds of being alive by the next morning were slim-to-none.

He swore as he walked down the hallway that her death would not be in vain. He would save as many other girls from her fate as he possibly could. And it had to be soon because he didn’t know how much more of this he could really take and stay sane.
