Subject: When A Time Comes (Chapter 8)

Numb, utterly numb. She couldn’t feel herself breathe – she couldn’t sense her feet beneath her shocked frame.

Unexpectedly, she was in front of the drapes – and she gasped at the suddenness. Her heart was beating violently, yet her nerve endings felt dull; stunned.

She had made it to the door of the limo before her soul had finally concluded its tirade against her, and demanded she return. And somehow, always, despite everything, her soul always won. It was likely the only thing that had kept her alive all this time.

It was simply ridiculous – the notion that she wouldn’t come to him. How could she not come? He had promised her, and she had promised him. All those years ago. She had said that he would know where she’d be – where he could find her. And he had. Now it was her turn to have the courage to face him.

All that bull about saving him from her reality was simply removing the choice from him. Was maintaining the control for herself. And while she held more control and power now than in the history of operatives – she knew she had never controlled him. Were she to run from the current situation in an effort to preserve him, he would be at her front door before sunrise. That much she knew for certain. And that was a confrontation she could restrain by presenting herself now.

Michael at her house was a guaranteed future event, she knew, because since he was here it meant he was staying. She knew it because she knew him. Completely. No other truth she argued for herself was possible. One way or another, Michael was back. To stop him, to try to prevent him, was an exercise in futility that would ultimately cost more – for them both.

She’d never backed down from this man before, and she wasn’t going to start now. Whether it tore them both apart in the end was no new threat. What mattered now was for her to go to him, and let the consequences fall where they may.

The drape was heavy as she lifted it with one hand. Full, it felt like it was soaking wet, it was so heavy. She couldn’t believe she was doing this. She couldn’t breathe.
