Chapter 148

Rene silently entered the kitchen and warily waved his staff outside. He was painfully aware of the presence and scrutiny of the gruff man who had introduced himself as Chris. The black suited man had made it apparent both by the things he’d said and his manner that his present objective was to capture the men he sought.

Dropping his normally disdainful manner, the culinary artiste moved to obey the order to evacuate with a resigned sigh. He hoped when this was over that they wouldn’t have to begin their work all over again. Such a measure be time consuming and expensive, with over four hundred people expecting to be served dinner at a particular time. He shuddered at the thought of having to explain his need for additional supplies to the management. Given the seriousness of the situation and who this was to protect, he hoped that he’d be forgiven if the need presented itself.

The kitchen staff was startled at the seeming urgency of their senior chef’s silent command to quietly exit their stations, but they obeyed unflinchingly. Most of them exited the kitchen with no fanfare, but a few gasped with horror on seeing the three armed men. Rene sighed, knowing that he’d have to give them a full debrief later. For the moment however, he swiftly hushed their erupting queries.

Chris nodded his approval of Rene’s swift cooperation. Then waiving his team forward, he refocused on their current objective. It was no concern of his how the chef debriefed his underlings and he ignored the cowering staff’s mute pleas for information. It was gratifying that the situation was running as smoothly as it possibly could thus far and he anticipated the favourable notation this incident would make in his report to Monsieur Samuelle.

The three black clad, armed men crept silently into the deserted kitchen. Using hand signals, Chris motioned for Roy and Denis to cautiously fan out as much as the layout of the room would allow.

Warily the team eyed the abandoned, razor sharp culinary equipment that was scattered on the various countertops. While Chris regretting interrupting the kitchen staff’s work, he hoped he and his team could keep the three men they were stalking from reaching any of these utensils.

‘Damn!’ Chris thought. ‘I hate it when a situation calls for going in blind but we have no choice. We have to contain this situation immediately!’

It was an unspoken fact that he and his team needed to be focused as they had no intel on whether or not the three dishwashers they were approaching were armed or not.

Thus far, luck appeared to be on their side. Chris’ team continued their approach, grinning in grim satisfaction as they noted that their quarry was positioned with their backs to them, blessedly unaware of their presence.

Tentatively, the armed men crept closer to the dishwashing area, and to Chris’ chagrin, just as they got within hearing range of their quarry, Mentz’s cell phone rung.

Pausing, Chris held his breath as he realized what might be gained by waiting. Holding his hand aloft, he signaled to Denis and Roy to wait. The two men froze in place, listening intently to what the suspect might say over his cell phone.

“Yes Jurgen” Mentz had said, “We’re inside, and as soon as dinner is over, we’ll find a way to grab the little blonde and bring her to you…. what was her name again… Nikita? Strange name…. Yeah… yeah… we can duck out of here, no problem. The head cook is a moron. It won’t be a problem. Are you sure your red haired friend can deliver?”

Chris grinned. ‘Gotcha! Jurgen, you hired some real winners! The com units must have picked that up and the cops will have heard it too. I’m just sorry that I won’t need to rough these morons up a little to get that intel… but it’s for the best. Now they can’t counter-charge me with assault.’

“Got that on tape.” Gagne said quietly in Chris’ ear, confirming his suppositions. “The cops heard it too. I’ll make sure they get a copy of the tape for evidence. It’s great they mentioned Jurgen by name… that way they can round him up too.”

“Understood” Chris whispered, and then signaled Roy and Denis to proceed.

Springing into action, Roy and Denis swiftly grabbed Jose and Carlos and cuffed them. Simultaneously, Chris grabbed Mentz.

“What?” Jose hollered. “Who are you? What’s going on? Where are you taking me?”

“I’m your worst nightmare come true if you don’t come with me right now.” Roy hissed. “We know what you’re up to.”

“What are you talking about?” Carlos shouted. “We have a job we have to do.”

“We know all about your job.” Chris growled, as he kept a firm grip on his target. “We heard your ‘friend’s’ phone call a few minutes ago, too. Your boss Jurgen thinks you’re bringing ‘the blonde’ to him, right Mentz?”

Mentz glared at Chris and became silent.

“The head cook might be a moron Mentz, but I’m not. I heard exactly what you said and so did my men. None of you are going anywhere. You’re all coming with us. This way.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Mentz maintained stubbornly. “We’re here to wash dishes.”

“Sure you are.” Denis sneered.

“Que pasa Mentz?” Carlos demanded. (What’s going on?)

“Shut up Carlos.” Mentz growled.

“Let’s go you creep.” Roy snarled, as he tugged Jose’s arm behind his back and roughly shoved him before him.

“Pig!” Jose sneered at Roy as the Frenchman steered his captive towards the kitchen door.

“You were planning to kidnap a pregnant woman so your boss could have fun raping her…. and I’m the pig?” Roy sneered back, knocking Jose down, only to pick up the cuffed man roughly. “You’re scum… I ought to….”

“What?” Jose asked in amazement, as he shifted his gaze from Roy to Mentz and his face paled. “Dios mio… you said….”

“He’s lying.” Mentz snapped at his compadre. “It was a business arrangement. No one was supposed to get hurt.”

“Yeah, right.” Chris muttered as he grabbed Mentz and yanked him towards the door. “And we’re supposed to believe you? I don’t think so. You and your friends are coming with us.”

“No really, it’s not like that.” Mentz maintained stubbornly. “Jurgen didn’t say he was going to rape the blonde… he just wanted us to bring her to him to force her husband to give him what he wants. It’s a business problem.”

“It’s got nothing to do with business, you fool.” Chris growled in disgust as he roughly shoved Mentz against the wall; leaning closer to growl menacingly in the other man’s face.

Mentz glared at his captor and then suddenly spat in his face.

“Why you…” Denis growled, stunned as the ignorance of the action. His superior was a good man and he shouldn’t have to suffer such a crass indignity.

Chris didn’t hear Denis’ exclamation as his reflexes overcame his better judgment and the next sound heard was the resounding crack of his hand against Mentz’s face.
