Chapter 2

The final powerful thrusts brought him to his climax and he slowed as he continued to throb inside of the young operative. The climax was satisfying and he liked this one, Nicole was her name and she was great in bed and at her job in Comm with him. He also felt an odd sense of almost comfort with her, not stemming just from her ability to perform her tasks at an exemplary level, but additionally just from having her close by. Something about the dark haired beauty soothed him, calmed his ever-present ache to ascend the ranks. She seemed to be so centered in just the moment, and she made it seem that it was ok to just be in this particular moment. Not worrying about the next one, or the next day or the next mission, or the next position.

“Jason? Are you all right?”

“Fine darlin’.”

“Um-hm.”

“That didn’t sound like you believe me.”

“That would be because I don’t.”

“I’m sorry. You know how my mind can wander.”

“Yes I do. But generally it takes a little bit longer than four seconds after we make love on the floor of the bathroom. And by the way it’s cold down here. Mind if we get up?”

“Of course.”

“So you want to talk to me about it?”

“Not really. Just need to sort some things out.”

“I have to be back on shift in ten minutes. So I guess you are working them out on your own. I was late the other day and I thought Quinn was going to cancel me on the spot.”

“She’s just trying to act tough for the new boss-lady. Thinks that if she rules with an iron fist Nikita will promote her. But Quinn isn’t the brightest bulb on the tree when it comes to knowin’ people.”

“She’s good at her job.”

“Tactically yes. She’s perfect, fewest mistakes on the board, other than me of course. But she lacks vision. To her it’s one task, check it off the list, next task, check it off the list. No long term objective, no vision, just do the job. It’s very frustrating.”

“Only to you Jason. Not all of us have ‘vision’. All I know is, I want to stay alive so I do the job. You have your priorities, I have mine.”

Jason sat on the bed and watched her as she washed up from their assignation, “What did you think of the Bolivia mission yesterday?”

“Execution was off, target not on site, unknown RP. Operations was not happy.”

“Yeah, tell me about it. I know the specifics, but what should be done with Trepanier now?”

“His timing was behind at second mark, it exposed the team. Word is he will be cancelled.”

“Do you think she’ll order that?”

“Operations? I don’t know. Protocol dictates cancellation, he was already in abeyance.”

“It would be her first direct cancellation ordered from the perch, no killer mentality there that I can see. I don’t think she has the balls for it.”

“Jesus, Jase! Watch what you’re saying, would you?”

“Now do you think I would have let anyone see, much less hear what just went on in this room? I am much better than that. Don’t worry, we are insulated for another seven minutes.”

“Still, things can be overridden. Don’t be so arrogant.”

“Arrogant? I’m hurt. Confident is what I am darlin’.”

She finished pulling on her clothing and kissed him briefly, “I have to run.”

“Hey,” he yelled to her as he stood naked in the doorway of the bath. “Will I see you later?”

“I’ll be around. You know where to find me.” With that she ducked out the door.

Jason stood staring at the spot where she had been for a long while, wondering why she seemed to affect him. She certainly wasn’t the type of woman that he normally would have been attracted to. She certainly didn’t have any power that drew his attention. Something just felt very strange about the whole need to be with her yet he could not deny the yearning that made its self known whenever she was around. He threw the feelings aside and started the shower, turning the water up until it was steaming. The scalding water burned at his skin and he stood under the water until he could no longer stand it. Then he began to scrub at his skin with the soap until it was bright red.

Out of the shower, he stood and looked into the mirror at the damage done to his skin. He rubbed at the tender red marks and wondered what had possessed him. He needed rest, he could feel it. There was a massive headache forming between his eyes and he started to feel a bit nauseous. On the large bed he fell into a disturbing sleep that included jarring dreams of his twin brother.

Chapter 3

Walter and Nikita were in the Perch and the operatives below them could tell that it was not a pleasant exchange that was taking place.

“Walter, I won’t do it.”

“You don’t have a choice.”

“Of course I do. I make the rules now.”

“No, you only think you do. Don’t start thinking the same way Paul did.”

Walter bringing up the past so bluntly stunned her, “How can you say that to me?”

“Because you need to hear it. You have to cancel Trepanier. Oversight is expecting the recommendation from you and you know it.”

“I know they are. But that doesn’t mean I have to give it.”

“They will view you as weak.”

“No. They will see me as running this organization the way that I see fit, not just bowing to their demands. I won’t do that Walter. You of all people should know that. This job is hard enough without you second-guessing me too.”

“Second-guessing? Nah, I’m just trying to make you stay alive and sane. There isn’t exactly a support group for this position you know.”

“Trust me I know that. And I know what they are expecting. But Trepanier is a Level Four, and I need all the experienced ops that I can get right now. I know he is off his game right now, but I can get him focused again, I just need a little more time.”

Walter shook his head, “It’s not your job to keep him focused. You have to run this place Sugar. It’s his job to find a way to be focused.”

She paused and took a deep breath, “Do you remember all the conversations over the years that we have had? I do. You kept me functional Walter in this mass of insanity. You saw me as someone worth saving, and I see Trepanier the same way.”

“Ok Sugar. I can’t fight you once you get that look in your eye. I just hope you know what you are doing.”

“Me too.”

Walter turned to leave and Nikita stopped him with her soft question, “Are they all right?”

He knew immediately that she was referring to Michael and Adam, “You would be the first to know otherwise.”

“Thank you.”

He noticed the slight tremor to her voice but realized that talking to her about it here wasn’t feasible. “No problem.”

Nikita took a deep breath after Walter left and tried to rein in her emotions. Keeping them so carefully concealed from outside view was exhausting and she wondered, for not the first time, how Madeline managed to cope for so long. Paul had let his emotions show, at times, but never Madeline. How did one manage to take all emotion and screen it away? Nikita remembered when she had been under the Gelman process and she had been absolutely exhausted after her recovery. She knew in part from just bottling up all her feelings for so long. Madeline had perfected the art, and made it look so easy, but it wasn’t.

She felt the strain of being distant and disconnected from any other person in her soul at every waking moment of every day, and lived it in her dreams when she slept. Trying to separate herself from the job that she had to do grew harder each day with each decision. She was Operations, and no amount of mind games that she played with herself could change that basic fact. She knew she wasn’t good at this job yet, but she was learning and she was learning fast. Michael’s words from long ago ran through her mind when he had occupied the post temporarily, “There’s a lot to learn.” He was always the master of understatement. A small smile slid across her beautiful face as she remembered the passion that had resulted after their exchange on that morning in the Perch. She had thought that Michael being Operations would grant them a way to be together, a way to have some life and still be in Section. She had always thought that he would end up being the one standing in this perch and overseeing Section. But many dreams had been shattered for her throughout her life and this was just another to add to the list. Or so she tried to tell herself.

She missed Michael, it felt as if a piece of her had been ripped out and the wound left open. She felt incomplete and so very, very alone. Each morning she awoke and there were those initial few milliseconds where she imagined that she was back in her apartment and Michael was lying beside her and she would be able to reach over and run her fingers through his hair. And then reality would come crashing into her consciousness and she would remember the chain of events that now brought her to the one place on earth where she never wanted to be, in charge of Section.

How ironic, so many people wanted this post and yet here she was. She remembered the battle that had taken place between Myra and Kelly for the position. Her father pinning them against one another, Kelly’s smugness after Myra was escorted away, he had been so sure that the post was his. Nikita knew that someone had messed with Myra’s file, and she had a strong feeling whom that that someone was. But no one had been able to prove that the file had been tampered with, it was clean. Myra had been demoted and had been put in charge of Section Three. Nikita didn’t know what the file contained, but it couldn’t have been good. Someone knew just what to do to make sure that Myra wasn’t running Section One. With that in mind, Nikita was not looking forward to her first meeting with Myra, which was in just hours. No she would be a woman scorned, and that was a very dangerous enemy.
