Chapter 151

Willie watched as Lakeisha was introduced to Chuck from his post across the room and his misery sank to a new low.

‘Oh no! Chuck’s falling for Lakeisha.’ He thought. Then he realized that he’d never let her know… really know… that he was interested in her. ‘Michael was right when he said if you don’t go after what you want, you’ll lose it. Now I get it… he was telling me I took her for granted. He was right! Why didn’t I listen?’

Finally remembering that they weren’t alone, Lakeisha turned to Marie and continued that woman’s conversational thread, while Chuck continued to watch her.

“And why don’t you come to Montreal very often? Where do you live?”

“My husband Guy and I live in Quebec City. I usually only come to Montreal for Chuck’s birthday.” Marie admitted.

“It’s your birthday?” Lakeisha asked with a pleased smile as she turned to look questioningly at Chuck’s face.

“Not tonight… tomorrow.” Chuck said quietly.

“Oh.” Lakeisha murmured shyly before turning back to speak to Marie once again.

“Couldn’t your husband come too?” Lakeisha asked curiously.

“No, unfortunately he couldn’t.” Marie said sadly. “He stayed home to watch our three children.”

“I see. So you didn’t know about Michael and Nikita before you got here?” Lakeisha inquired, nodding her acceptance of what she’d just been told.

“No.” Marie readily admitted. “I didn’t know Michel was back home. And I certainly had no idea he’d remarried. I’m glad I came and I’m really glad to see how happy he looks. I think a lot of Michel. He saved my life when I was a young girl.”

“Really?” Lakeisha inquired.

“Yes.” Marie acknowledged. “He pulled me out of our family’s pool when I was about fourteen. I named my youngest child after him as a thank you.”

“That is so sweet! It also means that you and Nikita have something in common.” Lakeisha said with a smile.

“What do you mean?” Marie questioned. ‘What in the world could I have in common with that gorgeous blonde?’

“Michael saved her life too.” Lakeisha revealed.

~~~~~~~~
Just then their conversation was interrupted by a raised female voice.
“Michel… chérie….”
“Veronique, arête! ” a frowning Michael stated bluntly in French. “Don’t call me that ever again! We’ve discussed this before so don’t try to pretend we haven’t. I’m happily married and I’m not interested in you or any other woman. If you wish to stay this evening you’ll have to behave.”
“But chérie….” Veronique persisted.
“Oh… so you’re Veronique.” Nikita said quietly, breaking into the French conversation swirling rapidly about her.
The woman’s name was one of two words Nikita had understood out of the swirl of French conversation surrounding her and she couldn’t help but bite her bottom lip to stop herself from laughing. The overly made up gold clad society woman standing before her was eyeing her contemptuously, as if to say that anyone daring to speak English in her presence was an abomination.
“Pardon?” Veronique said disdainfully, switching to English and glaring at Nikita. It was all Nikita could do not to roll her eyes as she became aware that the woman before her was clearly conveying her contempt.
‘She’s acting as if I were something she might scrape off the bottom of her shoe.’ A slightly amused Nikita realized.
“Michael’s told me all about the conversation the two of you had the other day.” Nikita revealed softly as she gazed levelly into the other woman’s overly made up eyes.
‘This woman has a lot of gall!’ Nikita thought as she narrowed her eyes and watched the woman in front of her intently. ‘She calls *my* husband “chérie” right in front of me? I may not know any French, but I do know what *that* word means!’
“And what do you mean by that, you little English tramp?” Veronique spat out in English, forgetting where she was and the fact that her parents and Michel were within earshot at the moment.
“Veronique!” Michael hissed. “Don’t you dare speak to my wife that way!”
Nikita’s eyes widened in shock. ‘Who does she think she is?’ she wondered. ‘She has the nerve to come onto my husband and suggest that I didn’t need to know if they resumed their relationship and now she’s talking to me like this? Michael’s right… she’s a tramp!’
Veronique flinched after hearing Michael’s admonition; finally wilting under his stern glare. Closing her eyes, she pressed her lips together in order to clamp down on a scream of frustration and attempted to regain her control.
Nikita said nothing and waited patiently. She knew Michael loved her and there was no need to be upset over this woman’s persistence in pursuing her husband.
‘Women like this one generally show what they were by how they act. It’s only a matter of time until this situation corrects itself one way or another.’ Nikita thought, as her patient nature asserted itself.
“What I meant to say was,” Veronique said carefully, “what were you referring to?”
“Nothing.” Nikita replied quietly. ‘She knows precisely what I meant! Unbelievable!’ “Just something you said to him when the two of you met the other day at lunch.”
“I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.” Veronique said airily. “Michel and I have had many an interesting conversation… at lunch… at dinner… and at other times as well.”
“Veronique…” Michael said warningly.
“It’s true, Michel.” Veronique continued with a faux smile pasted on her overly made up face. “We’ve had many interesting and *intimate* conversations.”
“I think not.” Michael said shortly.
“I’m sure you do.” A bluntly speaking Nikita continued seriously. “In fact, I’m sure if you think about it, it will come to you. I found the conversation the two of you had the last time you met highly informative.”
“I don’t know what you mean.” Veronique lied.
“Oh, I think you do.” Nikita repeated firmly as she stared down the society woman before her.
Veronique looked at Michel pointedly and saw by the expression on his face that he was not going to help her on this.
“You told her?” she asked him in amazement.
“Of course,” Michael said quietly as he stared down the tramp he’d dated. “I love my wife and I don’t keep secrets from her.”
Veronique narrowed her kohl lined eyes as her gaze shifted back to the beautiful blonde Michael had married. Then she began venting in the most profane Quebecois slang Michael had ever heard.
Nikita lowered her eyes demurely and said nothing. She knew the woman was angry, but she didn’t have a clue what she was saying.
‘It doesn’t matter if I can speak French or not. And I don’t need to say a word either. In fact, it’s probably better if I don’t speak! She’s angry; and she’s making a fool of herself in front of everyone! I can tell just by looking at the people standing behind her!’
Having realized these things, Nikita wisely maintained her silence. It was difficult not to smirk in triumph too... after all... this man was *hers* .... but she knew that saying nothing was the most eloquent response there was.
