Chapter 132

“But I want Mommy to come with us too.” Adam protested stubbornly.

“Adam,” Michael said firmly while gazing intently into his son’s green eyes, “Mommy’s just going to be gone for a little while, and then she’ll be home later.”

He understood his son’s fears completely after having a mother like Elena. However, he had to learn that Nikita was not like her and that all ladies went shopping occasionally.

“We’ll be fine for a little while… all right?”

“Okay Daddy.” Adam said wistfully. “Can she come with us the next time?”

“Of course.” Michael said with a contented smile. He was delighted that the two people he loved most seemed to be coming closer and closer.

“I’d like that Adam.” Nikita said with a soft smile. “It sounds like you and Daddy will have a lot of fun.”

“You and Lakeisha will have fun too.” Michael said with a tender look in his bride’s direction. “Don’t worry about us, we’ll be fine.”

Nikita smiled lovingly in his direction. He was so handsome, sitting there in his deep charcoal grey suit, pale grey shirt and the deep charcoal coloured tie she’d picked out for him that morning. His curly hair fell endearingly on his forehead and the loving look in his emerald eyes made her heart skip a beat.

‘How in the world did I ever get so lucky?’ she wondered. ‘Oh, I know he adores me… and it’s so hard to be mad at him when he looks at me like that!’

“I’m sure you’ll both be fine,” she said for Adam’s benefit. There was more she wanted to say, but she wouldn’t in front of Michael’s son. Then she glanced at her watch. “Lakeisha’s coming by the penthouse in about fifteen minutes. She and Willie said they’d be there by one thirty. I need to go upstairs and get my coat.”

“We’ll come with you.” Michael said, as he motioned to the waiter for the bill. “We need to get ours as well.”

Adam clung to Nikita’s hand as they made their way to the elevator. Michael lightly grasped her other hand and then pulled her close once the three of them were inside.

“I need to ask you something before you go.” He whispered in her ear. When she didn’t reply immediately, he pleaded, “Please don’t be angry with me chérie.”

Nikita didn’t reply, knowing that Adam was near and listening.

“Not now Michael.” She whispered in return, after kissing him lovingly.

“All right.” He agreed, reassured by the kiss and after seeing her nod in Adam’s direction.

‘She’s right, I need to ask her this privately.’ He realized with a rueful grin. ‘She looks a little upset…I hope she’s not mad at me….I want this… for both of us!’

Adam chatted happily about the park and what his favourite flavour of ice cream was until they reached the penthouse door.

After Michael unlocked it, he swiftly went to their room and changed his clothes. When he emerged minutes later, he was wearing jeans and a green sweater and he crouched down to talk to his son.

“Go get your coat and Daddy’s, will you please Adam?” Michael asked his son.

“Okay.” Adam said eagerly, and after flashing his father an impish grin, he rushed towards the closet in the hall.

Swiftly, but gently, Michael gathered his wife in his arms and pressed close to her, repeating his earlier plea. “Kita, please don’t be angry with me.”

“Michael...” she finally replied softly, “I’m not angry with you, my love. I just wish you’d told me what you wanted, and not made your wishes known through Madeleine.”

“I’m sorry, my love.” Michael said contritely. “I wanted you to go to a designer for your dress, but I wasn’t sure where to ask you to go. I asked for her advice.”

“And so did I.” she said, striving to be fair.

“Then you’re not upset with me?” he asked, with a small hopeful smile. “Please chérie? I couldn’t bear it if you were.”

Nikita’s heart melted as she plainly saw the lost look in his green eyes.

‘How can I stay angry with him? He’s so adorable and I know he loves me!’

“I’m not mad Michael…not really. I understand why you asked her advice.” She responded lovingly. “It’s just that it didn’t sound like a request coming from her; it sounded like a demand.”

“Oh ma douce, je suis désolé! (I’m sorry!) he said contritely once again as he softly caressed her beautiful face. “I never meant it that way, you know that don’t you cherie?” Michael said with a pleading look on his handsome face.

“Yes, Michael, I know that,” she said with a sweet smile. Shyly she lowered her eyes and Michael was delighted to see a blush form on her beautiful face.

‘Mon Dieu she’s gorgeous! I’m so relieved she’s not mad… I love her so much… and I hope she’ll understand that I want this for both of us…’ Michael thought as he gathered his courage to make his request.

‘How can I stay cross with him when he looks at me like that?’ Nikita thought with a sigh. ‘Now I see where Adam gets it!’

“Kita.” Michael quietly continued, looking her in the eyes lovingly. “Will you do something for me?”

“Of course my love.” The blonde replied. “What is it?”

“Marry me… again… at the party.” Michael pleaded softly as he gazed lovingly into her eyes.

“Why Michael?” Nikita asked softly, cocking her head to look at him inquiringly. “I don’t need a show, you know that.”

“I understand your reasons, but I need this my love.” Michael replied in a soft, pleading voice.

“You do?” Nikita asked, surprised by this approach. She thought he didn’t care one way or another. She looked deeper into his green eyes and saw that he was serious. “Why Michael? Why is this important to you?”

“I’m not sure why Kita” Michael said sincerely, but insistently. “All I know it that this is important to me.”

“But why?” Nikita asked, puzzled. “I thought it didn’t matter to you if we had a big ‘wedding display’.”

“It shouldn’t, but it does.” Michael replied. “You’re my wife, but I feel I need to proclaim that in a more tangible way than just an introduction.”

“I don’t understand.” A slightly frowning Nikita interjected. “What more do you need, my love?”

“Kita, I don’t know why, but all I know is this is important to me… to us. I want everyone at the party to witness how much your love means to me.” Michael replied softly, but insistently. “I want… no…I need this occasion to remember for the future. Please Kita…”

“But it will be a lovely party…I’m sure of that.” Nikita protested softly. “Why does it need to be more than that? Please Michael… I really want to understand.”

“Yes, it will be a wonderful party love, but I want to mark this occasion and make it special.” Michael explained patiently. “This is the first time I’ll greet my friends with the love of my life at my side and I want it to be special… in every sense. You may not need the pomp of a traditional wedding Kita, but I need this affirmation. Please, do this for me?”

Nikita was melting. The look on her gorgeous husband’s face and the sincere pleading she saw in his loving moss green eyes were making her knees wobbly and she knew her resolve about ‘shows’ was fading with each word he uttered. Besides, this was the first time he’d ever asked her for anything… and it was just a party… how could she refuse him?

“Michael…” she whispered, stunned by his loving reasoning. It was a good thing he was holding her close by the waist. If he hadn’t been, she was certain by now she’d be a puddle on the floor at his feet.

“Please Kita.” Michael continued, thinking he still had to press his point. “You’re special my love and I want this night to be special too… something the two of us will always remember.”

“Special?” Nikita echoed, although for the life of her she couldn’t imagine how she’d managed to utter that one word. This man… her husband overwhelmed her. “What do you mean… special?”

“Precious… ‘a pearl of great price’… Oh Kita, I don’t know how else to describe you, chérie. You mean the world to me and I want… no… I need to show that to the world!” Michael continued passionately as his hands crept to the sides of her beautiful face and gently caressed it’s incredible softness.

The gentle but demanding kiss that followed left Nikita gasping; for once, at a loss for words. She stared wordlessly at the loving man she’d married; her love for him increasing by leaps and bounds by the second.

‘A pearl of great price?’ she thought in wonder. Only Michael could make something that corny sounding seem so incredibly romantic. ‘Is that how this wonderful man thinks of me? Oh God… thank you for this man!’

When Michael released her from the kiss, both gazed at each other wordlessly for a few minutes before he found the presence of mind to continue in his plea.

“I want you to get an elegant dress today.” Michael continued insistently as he pressed his finger to her soft lips in a silent plea for her attention and silence. “Don’t worry about the cost either. You can be ‘careful’ another time, but not today. I want my angel to look like she just descended from heaven. That’s how I think of you… and how I’ll always see you. I just know that’s how one of Alfred’s dresses will make you look to everyone else too!”

Nikita’s eyes widened as she silently listened.

“I want us to renew our vows at the party Kita.” Michael continued resolutely. “This is important to me, love. I’ve already invited Father Philippe from St. Vincent’s church to ‘officiate’. He’s an old friend of my family… and he can’t wait to meet you!”

“You have?” she gasped, staring at him in wide-eyed amazement. “You’re serious about this!”

“Very serious.” Michael replied. “I need this love… and I need you to do this for me. Please Kita…. say yes.”

“Oh Michael!” Nikita gasped and then she burst into tears.

‘My husband is the most loving, romantic man!’ Nikita thought as her tears spilled unheeded down her face. Michael continued to look at her lovingly and she could plainly see his heart in his eyes. ‘This isn’t a “show” to him… it’s his way of proclaiming our love to everyone he knows! How can I not do this for him? He’d do anything for me!’

A part of her knew that she should be mad still at his assumption in asking the priest to the party and arranging all this before he’d made his request, but she was so overwhelmed by his need and his sincerity that she instantly forgave him this lapse and shoved that thought aside.

‘He may believe he needs this for himself… and maybe he does… but he’s also asking for this for the two of us. A part of him,’ she realized in wonder, ‘still refuses to believe that I didn’t want or need a “show” and this is his way of insuring that I didn’t have any regrets later. He’s so incredibly thoughtful! He’s anticipating how I’ll feel later if I change my mind! How can I refuse him?’

For a moment, Michael thought she was upset with him again, but then he realized that his words had overwhelmed her and that these were tears of joy.

“Does that mean yes, chérie?” he asked hopefully.

In reply, Nikita wordlessly threw herself into his arms and kissed him all over his face.
