Chapter 135

The week was filled with fittings and other shopping trips for accessories. In order to allay his fears, Nikita took Adam with her and Lakeisha for a few of the shorter trips they ventured out on, and for the rest, he stayed at the penthouse with Michael.

Always, Willie was their silent protector. The two friends had relaxed their conscious efforts to snub him; engrossed as they were in their preparations.

Willie watched the two friends closely and appreciatively. Both lovely women were enjoying themselves immensely and Willie knew that they’d both shine on the evening in question.
~~~~~~~
The night of the party arrived and Lakeisha’s dress was hand delivered to her hotel room. She greeted Miranda at her hotel room door with a appreciative smile and thanked her warmly for bringing her dress to her. After the girl left, she quietly shut the door in order to hang it up carefully.
Miranda was taken by surprise by the polite thanks. She was used to dealing with elegant society types who never thanked anyone for a thing. She’d just been upstairs delivering Madame Samuelle’s red gown to her too, and that woman had been so charming that she could scarcely believe it. Nikita’s words still rang in her ears.
“Thank you so much Miranda… and please thank Mick and the ladies who made this. It’s so beautiful! They’re so talented! I’ve never owned anything this lovely before.”
‘Hmm… wait until I tell Yvonne and Micheline this! Maybe now they won’t be so mad that they had to work so hard to make those three dresses.’ Miranda thought, pleased to be able to tell the hard-working women that their efforts and craftsmanship were valued by such an important client. It would be a refreshing change for them to receive such praise.
~~~~~
Almost immediately, or so it seemed to Lakeisha, another knock sounded at her door and she returned there to see what that summons was about. To her surprise, Michael was standing there with what looked like another clothing bag in his hand.

“Michael?” she said, surprised by his appearance here.

“Lakeisha” he began quietly. “may I please come in for a minute?”

“Sure.” She said as she stepped backward into her room.

As soon as the door was shut, Michael began. “I’m going to assume that Nikita’s told you that I asked her to renew our vows at the party.”

Lakeisha smiled. “Yes, she did.”

Michael smiled slightly in relief. “We didn’t have a fancy wedding Lakeisha. In fact, we got married in front of the village priest in our jeans, with just his housekeeper and handyman as our witnesses. I regret that. Nikita deserves better.”

Lakeisha waited patiently for him to continue.

“I bought Nikita a special dress from the same design house you two visited for your dresses.”

“You did?” Lakeisha said in surprise. “But Nikita’s bought a new gown for the party.”

“I know. Miranda’s already delivered it. Nikita thinks I’ve gone downstairs for a newspaper. I’ll have to tell her they ran out.” Michael said sheepishly, embarrassed to admit he’d lied to his wife, even about something so unimportant. “I only have a few minutes to ask you a favour.”

“If anyone owes anyone a favour Michael, it’s me that owes you. You bought me a dress too, remember? Thank you so much! That was so generous of you.” Lakeisha replied.

“You’re welcome. You’re Nikita’s friend. No thanks are necessary.” Michael replied.

“They are… and I hope you know I appreciate this.” she said sincerely.

“I know. I just wish Carla were here too, so I could buy her one as well. Kita would have liked that.” Michael said quietly.

‘Oh… he’s adorable!’ Lakeisha thought.

“Michael… Nikita told me what you did for Carla.. and for Anna. It isn’t your fault Carla died before you got there.” Lakeisha whispered.

“I know.” Michael said quietly and Lakeisha noted the sadness in his eyes. “I still wish it were true though. Will you do a favour for me?”

“Of course I will. What sort of dress did you buy her?” Lakeisha asked curiously as she peeked under the plastic garment bag. Her dark eyes widened in wonder when she saw the gorgeous pale cream lace confection that Michael was holding.

Michael saw her reaction and grinned. He hoped Nikita would be pleased as well.

“It’s not a wedding gown, but it’s almost as fancy. I’d like to leave this here with you, and maybe later you can help me convince her to change into it for our vow renewals.” Michael explained softly. “She told me once she didn’t care if she had a wedding dress; but I care. I want her to have this memory for the future.”

‘Oh my God!’ Lakeisha thought. ‘That’s the real reason behind him wanting Nikita to buy an “elegant” dress and renewing their vows! That’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard! I wish Willie was this thoughtful!’

“Nikita’s very lucky to have you, Michael.” Lakeisha said softly. “Of course I’ll help you. I’ll tell her later that I need to talk to her here privately for a minute, and I’ll convince her to wear it. She’ll be thrilled.”

‘She’ll also need a different pair of shoes!’ Lakeisha thought, furiously planning ahead to accommodate Michael’s scheme. ‘The shoes she bought for her dress are red! Well, she’s worn mine before… and I do have those cream suede heels….!’

“Do you think so?” Michael asked a little anxiously. “I just wanted this evening to be perfect for her. She deserves that.”
