Chapter 41

Carla at least had gained a good position within the room. She would have a good shot at David if it was needed. David was staring directly at her so she dared not make eye contact with Marco. This needed to end and it needed to end now.

Carla kept in character, “Look I am just a friend of Nikita’s…I don’t know what you want…but…”

“I said shut up!” David was beyond pissed now.

Then things began to happen almost in slow motion as Michael watched stunned. Suddenly Marco pulled his gun and shot the guard next to him at point blank. Carla then drew her weapon on David but before she could fire David shot her twice and she went down. The next thing Michael knew Marco and David stood facing one another both with their guns drawn on the other.

David laughed, “Well isn’t this interesting. So it is you. I knew there had to be a traitor I just didn’t think you had the balls for it Marco.”

“You’d be very surprised about me David.” Marco’s heart was pounding in his ears as he wondered how to make this play out.

“What do you think we should do here mister actor? This is quite the standoff.” Then David got a very dangerous gleam in his eye that Marco instantly recognized. “It was you, wasn’t it? You helped her escape. You were the one that got her out.” Now David was sweating and his angry was rising dangerously. “Who the fuck do you think that you are?”

Calmly Marco told him, “MI-6. Now it’s time for us to go David, out of this room.”

Again David laughed, “Why do you think you are giving any orders here you son-of-a-bitch!”

Then things exploded again so fast that Michael could do nothing but respond on instinct. David shot at Marco spinning him around with his first shot and then moved his arm to point his gun at Michael, taking aim at the only other witness in the room. Michael waited for the impact, then he could go with Nikita, but instead multiple shots rang out and Michael saw the shots entering David chest. Then Michael was pushed hard and slammed against the wall knocking over equipment and alarms began to blare in the room.

As Michael shook his head and tried to move he realized that Marco’s body was on top of him and the man was not moving at all. Medical personnel began swarming into the room and security was not far behind. People were shouting and Michael heard voices that he recognized, but he needed to get to Nikita. He had to be sure that she wasn’t further hurt in all this.

Meanwhile Walter had heard the alarms blaring and saw people running into Nikita’s room. Fearing the worst Walter took off in a sprint down the hallway with Madeline and Birkoff behind him. But he never expected what he saw in that room as he stood in the doorway. Blood was everywhere. Carla was on the floor, shot and she was covered in blood, it looked like three other men were also shot and medical personnel were all over the place. Walter heard both Birkoff and Madeline gasp behind him but he didn’t have time to worry about them. He was trying to find Michael. Then he looked down and saw a nurse in the opposite corner of the room check a man and yell, “He’s still alive, somebody help me.”

Then Michael shakily stood up leaning against the wall bleeding from his arm. Walter dodged everyone including security to get to him, “Michael!”

Michael couldn’t figure out what was going on around him it had all happened so incredibly fast. He looked at Walter and had only one question, “Nikita?”

Walter ignored him for the moment trying to wrap his mind around what might have happened but very worried about how pale Michael was looking, “Michael your arm. You’re bleeding bad. What the hell happened in here?”

He looked at his arm but the pain still didn’t register to his dazed mind as things continued to move so quickly. He wanted only one thing – to get to Nikita. Then he remembered, “Carla, they shot Carla.”

At that moment Brian entered the room and going directly into doctor-mode he immediately began to take control of the chaotic situation. “Get orderlies, remove anyone who is already gone. Now! Check pulses, tell me….whose alive…c’mon people this is what we do….” He took a moment to look at the monitors over Nikita’s head and realized that she was still alive.

A nurse replied, “Doctor I’ve got a pulse. Very weak, she’s trying to tell me something.”

Brian leaned over the severely injured Carla and quickly realized that the bullet wound to her abdomen was fatal. There wouldn’t be anything he would be able to do. But then the woman opened her eyes for a moment and grabbed his hand. He leaned down to her to try to comfort her in her last moments, “It’s all right. Just close your eyes.”

But she held on, “No….my pocket…..get it…..syringe…..” She was growing more upset and Brian reluctantly reached into her pocket and pulled out the syringe.

She took a rattling breath, “Nikita….for Nikita…..be quick….”

Michael had been watching and dropped by Brian’s side, “Did she say something about Nikita?”

Brian stared at the syringe trying to figure out what to do, “She said that this is for Nikita.”

“Michael….” Came a very strangled sound from Carla. “It…..will…save….” and then Carla was silent. Brian checked quickly for a pulse but shook his head and closed her eyes.

Michael was silent for a moment and then looked up at the woman that he loved lying in the center of all this destruction, still fatally ill. He didn’t understand really anything that had happened in this room in the last moments. All of it swirled through his exhausted mind and he couldn’t make sense of it at all. But he did know that Carla tried to protect him and Nikita from this horrible man that came in here, he couldn’t bring himself to think of him as Nikita’s husband. Those thoughts were for another time, another place.

Michael stood in the middle of the bedlam that was still happening and went to Nikita’s side, he picked up her cold hand and kissed it and then held it against his cheek. He brushed her face with the back of his hand and quietly told her, “I can’t really live without you, you know. I have to try this.”

He then turned to Brian, as Walter and his other friends looked on and told him, “Please give her the injection.”

Brian was shocked, “Michael, I don’t know what is in this. It could be anything. Maybe this woman was coming in here to kill Nikita. Look at what happened in this room.”

“I was here, I know what happened!” Michael snapped angrily, he was at the end of whatever rope he had left. Enough was enough. “Nikita is dying and she doesn’t have much time. I don’t understand all this but I don’t think Carla was here to hurt us. She was here to help in some way. Now please, if you won’t give it to her, give it me and I will do it.”

Brian hesitated, weighing his options. It was incredibly dangerous and could cost him his career and his ability to practice medicine. But Michael was one of the best people Brian had ever known, he had been there for him many times in the past and helped him more than anyone else ever had. Nikita had no chance at all without some type of intervention.

His mind made up he silently walked over to Nikita’s side, took the syringe and added the contents to the IV line. He stood there for a moment then turned back to his friend, “I have to look at your arm now.”

Michael stood firm, “I’m not leaving her side.”

Brian sighed and rubbed the tight muscles of the back of his neck, “All right. At least sit down while they clean up this room. I’ll be back to work on your arm right here.”
