First, let me make it clear that you will probably lose any data you added to the device since your last backup or hotsync.

Next, did you add any programs or other data to the device just prior to having this problem?

What do you mean by "when I attempt to replace the operating system"? What specifically did you do? Did you do a "hard reset" (following the instructions in the manual), which should clear all of the data from the device and take you to "square one" (only programs in ROM available)?
