I bring this up because a deer stand is located south

>(goldenrod meadow); The access to the deer stand is a
>path mowed !!through the port suthority property and
>into the park. This path connects to one of the dirt
>roads chained off and marked "authorized Personnel
>only". The stand is in the park and faces into the

While I am not the supreme authority on what happens in and around Oak Openings, I will shed as much light on this as possible. After several birders told me they were being kicked off Sager by officers toting M-16s, I called the Port Authority to get their explanation. The told me the Guard Base was helping with airport security and they have orders not to allow people to stop/park on Sager. I made the park manager and the chief of rangers (Dave Parker) aware of the issue. Parker contacted the Port Authority/Guard Base to discuss the matter. He was told that Bax is considered a terrorist target. After the shipment of shoulder launched grenades was intercepted at the Canadian border eariler this year, it was decided that cars parked along Sager posed a significant threat to airport security. As for the hunters, each one is appearantly "checked out" by the Port Authority Police and issued a permit to hunt (both deer and turkey) in the area. There is appearantly talk of closing Sager Rd. completely. While I agree with Greg that this is completely unacceptable, my hands are pretty much tied as long as my chief goes along with what the Port Authority declares necessary. I think TNA would be a perfect group to bring this issue to the public eye. I will try to be as much help as possible and will pass on any new information that surfaces. As for the deer stand, it has been a problem in the past and I will address it personally. Thanks for the heads up. Feel free to contact the park district administration directly. Dave Parker - Chief of Rangers or Jim Spengler - Park District Director
