Subject: Killdeer Plains, Saturday 12/20/03

Hello all,

I spent the daylight hours of Saturday at KPWA, arriving at 7:30am and leaving at 5:30pm. Not the best day for owls, I had one Long-eared on a very open branch in the now famous Cedar tree and one GH Owl near Carey, OH on the drive down.

Other raptors were well represented in and around KPWA. Kestrels, Red-tailed and Harriers seemed to be spotted at least every mile. Even several adult male N. Harriers which is always a treat. Rough-leggeds were fairly common as well with at least 5 different birds being seen, all light morphs. A couple of Cooper's Hawks were also observed.

I could not locate the Loggerhead, but the N. Shrike was present in the 2nd row of trees west of the sportsman's center. A handfull of E. Meadowlarks were also observed in the same tree row.

In the owl woods I did discover an E. Towhee and a RB Nuthatch while striking out on the owls.

Good birds to all!

Brian Z.
