Subject: TNA Algonquin trip report- the basics

We returned from 3 days at Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada (200 miles north of Toronto).

We saw approximately 90 species of birds and 10 species of mammals in the park boundaries. We saw all 4 of our "target" species: GRAY JAY, BOREAL CHICKADEE, SPRUCE GROUSE, and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER. Some were lifers for several in the group, and we obtained "blow your mind" looks at all of them, save for the chickadee. Fortunately, there were enough Boreal chickadees (about 10) seen on the trip, that everyone eventually got satisfactory looks.

Other good birds included calling LONG-EARED OWL and a very cooperative MERLIN.

The mammals were highlighted by howling TIMBER WOLVES at close range under the cover of darkness.

Needless to say, the trip was an unqualified hit.

I would encourage the others who went on the trip to offer their perspective, and hopefully Chuck will be kind enough to share some photos.

Greg
