Subject: Another(?) Blue grosbeak

I saw 2 Blue grosbeaks at Girdham/Reed this morning, with one being an adult male.

This appears to be a different bird--has anyone else seen an adult male?

It sang vociferously right next to the road as I pulled up, and soon after getting out of the car, another grosbeak flew into the same tree. It was a very brown young male, and then they started chasing each other all over the place. They both flew fairly far off the road to the west, and after several minutes of losing track of them, I could hear one singing again.

Continuing north on Girdham, I heard one Summer tanager give its call notes (did not bother to look for it) near the bike crossing, and saw 1 RH woodpecker next to the road.

Turning east onto Sager, I drove slowly, mostly noting the remarkable silence. A Hooded warbler along the north side of Sager, not far from Girdham was out of its normal habitat-probably a post breeding wanderer.

I heard 1 YB chat just west of the Sager/Wilkins field, and the usual suspects (Savannah and Grasshopper sparrows and E. meadowlarks) were heard in the field itself.

I was a bit surprised at the lack of song already. I was only there an hour, but at prime time-7:15-8:15am. I dipped completely on Blue-winged warbler, which I cannot recall the last summer morning visit I have had in the Oak Openings and missed this bird. In addition, common birds like Baltimore oriole and Yellow-throated vireo were encountered only as singles, and the oriole was silent.

I'm ready for shorebirds.
