Subject: Great Push of Migrants on Saturday

This is a late post. It seems clear that Saturday was very good day across the area.

Without a doubt, Saturday morning brought the best movement of passerine migrants that I have witnessed in the 15+ years I've lived in the Whitehouse area. From 7:00am to about 9:15am (when I had to leave), there was a non-stop parade of birds moving overhead with a very good variety descending into the trees on and around our property. All told, I had 76 species for the yard today -- undoubtedly my best total in 5 years here. Two new yard birds too! I spent some time doing some work in Waterville too, and the trees were alive with birds there later in the morning.
Here are the highlights for the day -- all at home in Whitehouse unless otherwise noted:

Double-crested cormorant - 19
Black-bellied plover - estimated 115 in a single group (new for yard list!)
Spotted sandpiper - 2 (overdue addition to yard list)
Common nighthawk - 1
Eastern kingbird - 16 (new yard high count)
Bank swallow - 20
Purple martin - 2
Blue jay - 220
All three mimids
American pipit - 14
Blue-headed vireo - 1
Yellow-throated vireo - 1
Red-eyed vireo - 3
18 species of warblers in the yard including
Orange-crowned - 1
Northern parula - 2
Blackburnian - 4
Hooded - 1
Golden-winged warbler - 1 (Waterville)
Blackpoll warbler - 1 (Waterville)
Warbler (sp?) - 200+ overhead
Indigo bunting - 30 (easily my highest yard count)
Lincoln's sparrow - 1
Lapland longspur - 4 (by far the latest I've ever seen them)
Bobolink - 35 (all overhead)
Orchard oriole - 1
Baltimore oriole - 35 (easily my highest yard count)
