Scott-

My advice would be not to go at all. NW Ohio in my opinion is better for overall species diversity, and chances to get best looks at things.

Pelee has the mega-rarities show up more often, but there is no guarantee.

And the crowds are simply unbearable (although the crowds at Magee aren't exactly light nowadays).

That said, if you still would like to see it for yourself, then it is about a 2 hour drive from Toledo, assuming there is no real wait over the Ambassador Bridge.

The park opens at 5am in May to accomodate the hordes of birders. The "usual" plan of attack at Pelee is to go straight to the "tip" first thing in the morning (via tram from the Visitors center or a longish walk) to see what is around.

Bird your way back to the Visitor's Center, stop in and read the "book of lies". Make a determination which figment of someone's imagination you wish to chase down in the afternoon. A helpful hint would be to NOT chase down any "Blue grosbeaks". IN all seriousnes, "the book of lies" is a term of endearment, and one that is long-standing and well-known, believe me.

In my honest opinion, I think Magee offers MUCH better looks at more species along its boardwalk, and you get more bang for your buck. But no doubt, Pelee can be great, and you will certainly enjoy yourself.

Point Pelee in the FALL, on the other hand...now THAT is a special time and place!!!

Good luck,

Greg Links
