Hi Susan,

Congratulations on your find. Rose-breasted grosbeaks are beautiful birds! They are fairly common around here during spring migration, however. The chickadee was most certainly a black-capped as carolina's mostly occur in southern Ohio. Your instincts were right about paying attention to its vocalizations though. If you don't have a bird song tape or CD yet, it's a good thing to have if you really want to get involved in bird identification.

I grew up in the old west end, and while not a birder then, I do remember seeing woodpeckers, but never either of your two birds. It's nice to know they're in the OWE.
