Subject: Northcoast Open rarities

The 2003 NCO was once again alot of fun, and as usual, some good birds were discovered. Not so usual were the birds' degree of rarity.

WHITE-FACED IBIS: Discovered by myself, Becky, Jeff, and Brad Cullen at Pickeral Creek Wildlife Area north of Fremont. This bird was observed yesterday and also today by Dan Sanders, so it is obviously hanging around. It is a sneaky little devil, and patience may be required. Today it was seen in cell 15. If it were me looking for the bird again, I'd park in lot C, which is one east of the platform. Walk north on the abandoned road, and begin searching the impoundments carefully.

LEAST TERN: Discovered by Matt Anderson at Metzger marsh. Seen flying out over the lake, but should be watched for at any lakeside location.

LAUGHING GULL: Discovered by Eric Durbin in a field west of Toussaint. Should be looked for amidst the flocks of gulls in the farm fields.

AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN: Not sure who discovered this bird on Friday May 16 at Pipe Creek Wildlife Area. But it was kind enough to remain for me and the Cullens on Saturday. It could easily be still present.

WESTERN MEADOWLARK: The Whitehouse,OH bird has taken up residence at the Whitehouse soccer fields.

Hopefully Event Coordinator Eric Durbin will post a message with all the 2003 Northcoast Open details.

Good luck with the ibis!
