Subject: Sandhill cranes over Irwin Prairie Saturday

Three Sandhill cranes, flying east to west, paused over Irwin Prairie on Saturday, about noon. They circled a dozen times, causing me to hope they might be thinking of landing, but instead they gradually gained altitude. Apparently they were catching a lift from a thermal column being generated by the burned and blackened areas along the road. The cranes continued west.
FYI: The "eye" of the prairie is very dry, and looks very uninviting for herps and marsh birds.
