Subject: Sunday - big movements - 1000's Longspurs, Goshawk, Cranes

What an incredible day! I started cleaning Bluebird boxes about noon and started noticing groups of Longspurs heading over my property (Wood County, near Otesego Park). I quickly added 9 Sandhill Cranes and a Red-shouldered Hawk. As I turned my attention over towards the River (about 1/4 mile away) I noticed huge groups of ducks flying by. While watching for ducks I noticed a Goshawk flying along the river as well.

I ran to get my scope and spent the next hour chaulking up a Canvasback, Wigeon, Redheads, Goldeneye, hundreds of Scaup Mallards and Geese and a Pipit. As I watched I continued to see groups of Longspurs fying by. I decided to grab a piece of paper and pencil and start counting. The groups were moving almost directly ovr the front of my property, so I moved a chair and scope about 600 feet to the front of my property.

All the groups were moving Southwest along the River. I presume they had hit the Lake and were trying to fly West around it, and then just continued along the River southwest. In all I counted 62 groups of Longspurs for a total of 3,613.

The Canvasback and Wigeon where new for my property list bringing it to 169. This was a day to remember!
