Subject: Return of Shorebirds, and more...

Some miscellaneous birds of interest seen today and the locations:

American bittern: Remained on the Magee causeway in the open. Quite nice.

Northern Saw-whet owl: As Rick described, through at least 4pm this afternoon (Peter and Polly White and I enjoyed superb viewing of this bird after Rick clued me in to its relative whereabouts). More specifically, there are 2 red No Trespassing signs west of the west end of the Magee Bird trail. Stand behind the second round post west of the 2nd sign, and look into the tangles. The bird was looking back at us about 20 feet in, at eye level. As far as Saw-whets go, this one was easy to spot.

Northern shrike: Magee causeway, per Gerry Klug. I dipped.

Dunlin: A flock of 45 winging quickly over route 250 near Cedar Point in Sandusky.

Pectoral sandpiper: 3 along Park Colony road

Greater yellowlegs: 1 along Park Colony road

Lesser yellowlegs: 6 along Park colony road

American pipit: 25+ along Park colony road

Great egret: Back in numbers

American wigeon: 1,500+ were impressive at Metzger marsh. Alas, no Eurasian wigeon.

Sandhill crane: 4 standing in Metzger marsh

Merlin: 1 flyover at Metzger marsh

*All 20 species of regularly occurring ducks were noted. The divers are clearing out quick, though. Only small numbers of goldeneye and Canvasback were detected.

For a full update, be sure to call the NW Ohio Rare bird alert at 419-877-9640. I will update it later tonight, pending the results of others who were in the field today--I am waiting to hear from them yet.
