Subject: Red-necked grebe

I finally was able to track down a Red-necked grebe on this side of Lucas County just a short while ago. Daily drives by Salisbury Quarry have yielded mostly Common loons (two are still there), but a swing by Hidden Harbor was very productive a short while ago. Best bird there by far was a single Red-necked grebe that I would still describe as being in winter plumage with hints of the breeding plumage to come. Accompanying the RNG were at least 4 Pied-billed grebes, 10-12 Horned grebes, at least 6 Common loons, a few dozen Red-breasted mergansers, 4 Ring-necked ducks, 15 or so Bufflehead (in the pond just west of the main lake) and numerous Bonaparte's gulls. The best viewing spot is the small parking area near the southwest corner of the lake. The RNG was hanging out with the mergansers, and -- at least initially -- may be brushed off as one of the female mergansers.

Be forwarned that birders have not always been welcomed with open arms at Hidden Harbor. Please do not trespass and be respectful of all who live in the neighborhood.
