Subject: W W Knight Ramble (TNA field trip)

Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., 14 birders walked the well-maintained W W Knight preserve in Wood County to get a preview of early spring migration.

For an hour and a half we walked the nature trails amidst dozens of White-throated Sparrows calling in the heavy brush. Meeting at the parking lot felt a little more like a late winter birding trip than an early spring hike as the breezy 40-degree weather was mixed with heavy overcast skies.

At the start of the hike I stated a goal of 25 species considering the short time table ad cold, breezy weather. The ending count was 32 species. Here is the list of sightings:

Double-crested Cormorant
Great Egret
Wood Duck
Mallard
Turkey Vulture
Ring billed Gull
Mourning Dove
Belted Kingfisher
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Eastern Phoebe
Tree Swallow
N rough-winged Swallow
Bank Swallow
Barn Swallow
Blue Jay
Black-capped Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
House Wren
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Blue-Grey Gnatcatcher
Robin
Starling
Cardinal
Song Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Red-winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Brown-headed Cowbird
House Finch
Am. Goldfinch

Next year I am going to reserve the 2nd Tuesday in May for this field trip - with a goal of 50 species.

Chuck
