Subject: Little Cedar Point Field Trip Sept 22-results

A group of 20 TNA members and non-members from all over Ohio gladly took in the field trip to the normally off-limits Cedar Point NWR in eastern Lucas county today.

Birding was quite good, as expected. 106 total species were found, with no true rarities, but some species of interest.

The highlights:

*18 species of warblers (Cape Mays were 2nd in abundance only to Blackpolls), many many individuals

*At least 2 Philadelphia vireos

*1 Black tern, among over a thousand Common/Forsters terns

*12 species of shorebirds including a half-dozen Red knots, a Stilt sandpiper, A White-rumped sandpiper, several Sanderlings and a Long-billed dowitcher or 2.

*A rather early Red-breasted merganser

*While pretty much on time, the season's 1st YB sapsucker

Special thanks to the Ottawa NWR management for the special use permit for the day--it was a great experience!
