Subject: Sandusky Bay Tour

Jeff and I took a tour of Sandusky Bay on Sunday 10/27 from Wightman's Grove to the Chausee. Plenty of good mud around at several locations. Dunlin were present in large numbers with a good number of G. and L. yellowlegs. There was a half dozen or so sanderlings at Wightman's Grove, snipe at the Chausee and Pickeral Creek. In a 1 1/2 hour hike around the dikes at Pickeral we saw 2 ducks in the marshes (a female blue-winged and a female ruddy). Offshore though were somewhere between 1500 and 2000 ruddy ducks with one lone ring-necked. A couple of Forster's terns were also flying along shore. 58 tundra swan were settling in for the night just off the beach. A nice surprise was a flock of about 20 snowbuntings along the old bay bridge. Medusa Marsh held the expected puddle ducks with only blue-winged and wood duck missing. There were hundreds of Bonaparte's gulls around as well as a good number of tree swallows.
