Subject: RED-NECKED STINT at Pickeral Creek Wildlife Area 7/31,also RUFF

Some very reliable observers saw a breeding plumaged RED-NECKED STINT at Pickeral Creek Wildlife Area today at about 11am.

This is a mega-rarity for Ohio, and also the interior of North America. I'm not sure how many records for the interior there are, but there are few.

Unfortunately, I dipped on this bird with very limited time this afternoon. But I was rewarded with a bnice consolation prize, a female RUFF, AKA Reeve which has been present for nearly a week at this location.

Other goodies included a MARBLED GODWIT, a WESTERN SANDPIPER, and a handful of WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.

Pickeral Creek is on State route 6 near Fremont. From the Observation deck, walk north a short ways on the dike, and jog to the left. The dike then continues out to the north, and shorebirds are evident all along this stretch, looking back to the east. It is excellent habitat, and there are lots of birds present.

I believe the stint is still there.

Afternoon lighting is best.

GOOD LUCK!

Greg
