Subject: Exciting field trip announcement

The Toledo Naturalists' Association is thrilled to announce a birding field trip to Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, September 22, 2002.

For those who do not know, Cedar Point is a National Wildlife Refuge just east of Maumee Bay State park, and encompasses large marshes, lakeshore, and woodland habitat. Its geography makes it a phenomenal migrant trap in the spring and fall.

Normally, Cedar point NWR is off-limits to the public. In the early days, the late Lou Campbell documented the birdlife of this fabled area. Then much later, in the 80s and into the early 90's I believe, Joe Komorowski and others contributed by leading monthly hikes there. The area had been virtually uncovered the last 5 years or so, and now a small group of veteran birders access the area regularly to monitor the birdlife.

It has been around 4 or 5 years since the general local birding community has been granted access to what may be the most intriguing and important single birding locale in the state of Ohio.

Cedar Point NWR has a fantastic history, one of native Americans, fisherman, pirates, bootleggers, and rare birds.

That said, mark your calendars. Sunday, September 22, I will lead a field trip to take in fall migration at Cedar Point NWR. This trip will be quite limited to the number of participants, so there will be a first-come, first serve reservation list required. I would strongly encourage those interested to make their reservations ASAP. This field trip will fill to capacity in a hurry.

Last and certainly not least, I would like to thank the management and staff at the Ottawa NWR for granting the TNA a permit for access to this special spot. Hopefully, all will go very well, and this trip will become a regular event on the TNA calendar of field trips.

Inevitably, there will be some who want to come but do not reserve a spot in time. For any possible future field trips to Cedar Point NWR that we may be lucky enough to secure, the people who don't make it on this trip will get first priority the next time around. Also, TNA members will get priority over non-members.

To reserve your place and get more details, contact me via email or call the NW Ohio RBA and leave a message at the end of the tape. 419-877-9640
