Subject: Goll Wood Field Trip SUNDAY 4/28

Okay, not this is not a bird report, but birders are welcome to attend this field trip.

Goll Woods State Nature Preserve, in western Fulton County, about one hour west of Toledo, contains a tract of nearly virgin old-growth woods with giant bur, white, and chinquapin oaks that are hundreds of years old. The rich loam of the forest floor supports numerous spring wild flowers: Dwarf ginseng, Dutchman's-breeches, Toadshade, Mitterwort, Wood Anemone, and many others. Spectacular shows of these ephemeral blooms can be expected every April and May. The primary trail through the old woods offers a choice of one and two mile loops. The trail is level, but, because Goll Woods is a swamp forest, may have some wet spots. There are pit toilets by the parking lot, but no water. Bring your wildflower guide book and your binoculars (there's a chance of Pileated woodpecker!) and meet leaders Nancy Bucher and Eric Durbin in the parking lot at 2 PM.
Directions: Take Rte 2(Airport Hwy)/Rte 20A west from Toledo. At Wauseon (where Rte 2 jogs south), continue straight west on Rte 20A. At Rte 66, turn south, toward Archbold. Go 1 mile and turn west on Twp Rd F. Go 3 miles to Twp Rd 26 and turn south. The parking lot is 1/4 mile.
