Subject: Kirtlands warbler today

I observed a singing male Kirtland's warbler late this afternoon at Metzger Marsh in Lucas County. The bird was in a Willow tree and thicket just below the tree along Metzger's entrance road right where the road makes a 90 degree curve toward the left. I watched it for 15 minutes, between 6 and 6:15pm.

The woodlot at the end of the causeway had "fallout" conditions late this afternoon as well. The very small woods was absolutely swarming with neotropical migrants (mostly warblers), the likes of which I have seldom if ever seen. 26 species of warblers were seen and/or heard there in a relatively short amount of time, and at times, the sheer number of birds was overwhelming.

Add another 6 that I saw on the Magee boardwalk for a total of 32 species of warblers this afternoon--not too shabby.

Uncommon warblers seen besides the Kirtland's:

Golden-winged (1 at Magee, 1 at Metzger)
Orange-crowned (1 Magee)
Cerulean (1 Metzger)
Prothonotary (1 Magee)
Kentucky (2 Magee)
Hooded (2 Magee)

Some later-arriving species were seen, including multiple Mournings and Canadas.

*All 5 Catharus thrushes were seen
*All 6 vireos were seen

Acadian flycatcher was a new arrival.
