Well, Lee, you went right to my heart on this one. Your comment:
Perhaps there is no truer adage than the one that cautions: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

I cannot count the number of times my mother said those words to me when I was young and argued every injustice known to mankind and had a way (in my mind) to fix it. I thank God every day now for her presence then to keep my flaming liberalism in check. She knew I was a good person and, at least, thought about the world beyond myself. She also knew I had the ability to convince others around me of courses of action because I could impress them with my vocabulary, wit, and empathy. With only her ninth grade education and a lot of hard sacrifice to live and give me the freedom to shoot off my ignorant mouth then, she still managed to guide me to where I am today. She always told me there was nothing wrong with my ideas but to save them for heaven and in the meantime, "first, do no harm" here on earth. She also told me that I was in the top 10 percent of intellect but that my failing was that, I assumed everyone else was up there with me. Now that I am matured, I understand what she meant.

She meant that all of us would love a Utopian Society here on earth but 90 percent of us aren't up to the task. She meant that for the 10 percent to try to force it's will upon the 90 percent was a sure course for disaster. She meant that most of the 90 percent don't understand true "good will". She meant that helping your neighbor or a stranger the best way you can on an individual basis is the only way we have on this earth to show our own individual worth. She meant that if you don't protect yourself first, you can't help anyone else. She meant that wishing things were different for mankind is not a solution and either is leading others who don't understand this into harm's way.
