Hasn't it occurred to you that "illegal" (where immigration or anything else is concerned) is just what the government says it is, and nothing more?
There's no inherent difference between a "legal" and an "illegal" immigrant, though the latter are more likely to be desperately poor and willing to risk their lives for a shot at a better future. I suppose in the eyes of the selfish and cynical, that poverty is a mark against them —— in this view, no doubt, they should just go home and die early and decrease the surplus population.
War, you say? Where do you think war is more likely to break out, Clark? Where there are vast, government-created disparities in wealth, such as between the United States and Mexico, or where there is relatively equal wealth and open borders, such as between the U.S. and Canada? Opening the Mexican border will alleviate the disparities.
Finally, this talk of "our" citizens, "we" must do this, and so on has come to bore and disgust me. Nothing but nationalism —— the same force that powered the NATIONALIST German Socialist Workers Party, aka the Nazis, and a major ongoing scourge on humanity (see my previous article, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse"). Why can't folks like you recognize that people other than Americans are also humans, and should not be treated as less just because they had the misfortune of being born outside the United States?
Sniper Malvo, what a red herring. Plenty of serial killers have been born and bred right here in the good 'ol USA —— Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dalhmer, etc. Maybe the states that have produced fewer mass murderers should close off their borders with neighboring states known to routinely harbor such criminals, eh?
The sad truth is that a lot of people living here don't appreciate or understand the meaning of freedom. They've grown up with a lot of opportunity compared to most people elsewhere, and think that because of their good fortune the law should guarantee them better treatment than others who weren't so lucky.
If I've come across a bit harsh, perhaps it's because I just read the following message from Nassir Hashim Mohammed Al_Madi, posted to this very board. Clark, from what you write here, I can't help but feel that Mr. Al_Madi and his family are much more deserving than you to live in the United States. I don't think they would be so quick to slam the door shut in other people's faces.

I'm palestianian born in hayfa palestin I live with my wife in morocco
and we haven't any pasprts such we can't see our kids who live in other
countries I would tell you to know we did not see our doughter about 12
years and did not see our boys who live in germany about 5 years . the
big problem my boys whom live in germany they lose all human rights
watch .they can't work thay can't they can enter any school they cant
move free inside germany .
PLEAS HELP MY KIDS TO GET THIER HUMAN WRIGHTS WATCHAND AND HLEP ME TO
GET ANY PASPORTE WITH ANY COUNTRY TO SEE MY MY KIDS.
