In reply to: JohnE. 's message, "Christians are biggots and they can never be true libertarians" on 13:28:48 08/28/02 Wed

You make two claims:
Christians are bigots-

In proof of this claim you speak of going up to a
Christian and watching their reaction when you tell them
you're Athiest.
Why don't you go up to a libertarian and tell them that
you're a communist. I bet you'll get quite the reaction
from them as well.
I believe libertarians should be the least bigotted
group of them all because we all have the common belief
that it is not our place to interfere with someone else's
life and nobody should interfere with ours. I've had many
athiest friends, I had a girlfriend who was athiest, I've
had a jewish girlfriend and a Pentacostal Holiness girlfriend.
They each had their views and beliefs and I respected
their points of view and on those views that we differed
on, we agreed to disagree. But we had respect for each
other and as a libertarian I tend to have the 'live and
let live' attitude about most things.

Which brings us to your second statement:
Christians can never be true libertarian-
I am Christian, I accept Christ as my savior. I am also
a libertarian, I believe in individual responsibility and
freedom. These are two seperate beliefs that have no
conflict with each other. If I were living out in a
log cabin in Montana living my daily life without interfering
with my neighbors and still worshipping in my own way
I would be living a very libertarian life.
So, again I see no reason why a Christian can never
be a true libertarian.

Just because there are some socialists and some facists
in power who also happen to be Christians does not make
much of a case for saying that one can not be Christian
and libertarian. There are also athiests in our government
trying to pass intrusive laws and raise taxes, this does
not mean athiests cannot be libertarians.
