Who said the Republicans are good guys? Or the Democrats, Libertarians, or any other party? Everyone has gotten their hands dirty at one point or another; heck, the vice prez of MADD was pulled over for drunk driving in the mid-80s.

Lincoln had every right to wage war against the rebels. America could hardly afford to be divided amongst itself, which its enemies would take advantage of at every turn. The will of the Southerners to fight had to be broken before the war would end, though Sherman's March to the Sea was a bit extream. Many of the men under Lee were willing to head into the hills and fight a guerrilla war if the old man hadn't said no.

If Lincoln fought the civil war for greedy businessmen, then I guess the only reason we fought in WWII was because we wanted to take advantage of the poor Krauts and Japs, or the American Revolution was the result of corrupt business intrests.
