Usually the "will they or won't they" return rumours die down after a few months, but since the Sale rumours were still present as recently as late last year, one assumes its return is still being discussed.

The most recent article on the matter is from the Adelaide Advertiser of 2 Novemeber 2003...

FORMER Hey Hey It's Saturday host Daryl Somers is planning a comeback and is strongly tipped to be the new Sale Of The Century host, according to industry insiders.

Somers unexpectedly failed to appear on Ian "Molly" Meldrum: Toasted And Roasted, taped on Thursday night. However, it was his excuse that set tongues wagging.

A source said that when approached for Meldrum's show, Somers had said he planned a comeback.

The former frontman had said he did not want to lessen the impact of his return with a one-off appearance.

There was a poor relationship between Somers and Nine Network executives in his final years with Hey Hey.

Many have moved on but, according to the source, Somers initially refused to release Hey Hey footage for the Meldrum special because of a continuing dispute with Nine.

Somers finally relented but stipulated the footage had to have "minimal" vision of himself.

Nine agreed. The Meldrum special is due to be shown on November 12 despite speculation it would be shelved.

However, even after the necessary heavy editing, the original 7.30pm timeslot is unlikely to be suitable because of the adult nature of its content.

Somers was a hot tip for the Sale role six months ago after Grundy Entertainment, which makes the show, failed to replace Glenn Ridge, despite extensive auditions. Somers played down speculation of a return to TV at the time.

"It's probably up there in the air somewhere floating around as an idea," he said.

"But, gee, I have to ring journalists these days to ask them what I'm doing as far as television goes."

Somers has kept a low profile since Hey Hey stopped in late 1999 but he did return to the stage in the musical Bye Bye Birdie in July.
