Rockets' Hill plans to play at IUPUI

One of the top returning scorers in Indiana has elected to play basketball at IUPUI.

George Hill, who averaged 23.6 points last season as a junior at Broad Ripple High School, made a verbal commitment Tuesday to play for the Jaguars.

"I like the coach (Ron Hunter) and the style of play," Hill said after a campus visit. "And I'll be close to home."

The 6-2, 180-pound guard is the third-highest returning scorer in the state behind Iowa-bound J.R. Angle (24.6) of Indian Creek and Hammond Noll's Gary Patterson (23.8).

Hill, who scored 41 points in a game last year, fills the first of four available scholarships for IUPUI. The signing period begins Nov. 12. Coaches are prohibited by NCAA rules from commenting on recruits until letters of intent are received.

"I think he's a great kid for IUPUI," said Hill's AAU coach, Billy Shepherd. "He went to the Adidas ABCD camp and was ranked as one of the top 10 guards. We went to the final 16 in Las Vegas, and he played great all summer."

Hill said he received interest from Kansas State, Tennessee, Oregon, Ball State and Indiana State, among others.

"He's so versatile," Shepherd said. "He's got a nice outside shot, and he can get to the basket."

Hill is the second high-profile high school recruit from Marion County in as many years for IUPUI, whose recruiting status improved with last year's NCAA tournament berth.

Among the incoming recruits for this season is former Pike point guard David Barlow, the first Indianapolis Star Indiana All-Star to play at IUPUI.
