MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM ADDS JUCO DUO FOR 2003-04 CAMPAIGN

The IUPUI Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter announced that Black Hawk-East College teammates Akeem Clark (Gary, Ind./Roosevelt) and James Booyer (Gary, Ind./West Side) have signed Departmental Grant-In-Aids and will join the men’s basketball team for the 2003-04 academic year.

The duo led Black Hawk-East to a 15-13 record and a No. 4 ranking in NJCAA Region IV, Division I.

Clark, a 6-foot-3 combo guard, averaged a region-high 22.6 points per game last season in being named Honorable Mention All-America. He drilled 103 treys in 28 games, while also knocking down 114 free throws at a 73 percent clip. He was named Team Most Outstanding Performer for his efforts.

Clark was also named First Team All-Region IV last season and was a second team choice as a freshman. He was also a two-time All-Arrowhead Conference pick.

“We’re really excited about Akeem,” Hunter said. “He may be one of the best shooters we’ve ever had in our program. His ability to score and stretch defenses will help him make an immediate impact on our team.”

Booyer, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged just over 14 points and six rebounds per game last year. He also rejected nearly two shots per contest this past season and was named First Team All-Region IV. He was also selected All-Arrowhead Conference this past season and chosen Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.

“James’ athleticism will help him fit right into our system,” Hunter said. “We like the long, athletic, rangy kids that get after it and play defense. He’ll be a great addition to our pressing and trapping style of defense.

“Best of all, both these kids are Indiana kids that come from great high school and junior college backgrounds. We’ve made an emphasis on building this program around in-state kids, and this continues to follow the mold.”

IUPUI comes off its most successful season in Division I history, having captured the 2003 Mid-Continent Conference Tournament Championship and making the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth.
