Subject: Chicago State wins first exhibition game 130-60

CHICAGO, Illinois – The Chicago State University Men’s Basketball team cruised to a 130-60 win over Grass Roots Canada in their home exhibition opener at the Jacoby D. Dickens Center.

The CSU men jumped out to an early 13-5 lead in the game’s opening minutes before Grass Roots mounted a 14-9 run behind eight points from former CSU center Clark Bone to cut the Cougars’ lead at the midway point of the first half at 24-21. From that point, the Cougars outscored Grass Roots 40-10 in the final 10 minutes of the half to enter halftime with a 64-31 lead. CSU scored 28 points off 19 turnovers committed by Grass Roots during the run.

The second half continued where the first half ended with CSU guard Craig Franklin scoring eight of the Cougars’ first 13 points including a three-pointer that capped a 13-4 run to give his team a 77-35 lead with 15:59 remaining. Franklin was a preseason Second-Team All Mid-Con selection this season.

“No matter whom our opponent was today, I was looking for our guys to play together, play smart and play hard,” CSU Head Coach Kevin Jones said. “They came out and did that today and put on an impressive performance.”

Sophomore Nate Carter drained a jumper in the paint with 6:40 remaining in the game to put the Cougars over the century mark at 101-52.

The Cougars finished the game shooting 71 percent from the field and 89 percent on 16-of-18 shooting from the free throw line.

Senior Rubeen Perry led CSU with 24 points on 8-of-9 field goal shooting while Franklin and junior Tony Weeden each added 23 points. Freshman Royce Parran and sophomore Terren Wilson added 13 points apiece in their first action in a CSU uniform.

“As a whole, everyone that went on the floor did what they are capable of doing,” Jones said. “I’m just pleased with the overall effort of the entire team.”

Perry Cohen led Grass Roots Canada in scoring with 17 points while Bone and Herman Jefferys added 13 points apiece.

The Cougars will host St. Ambrose University in their final home exhibition game on Tuesday, November 18 before opening the regular season on Friday, November 21 at Northern Iowa.
