Gents, Ladies eager to begin Mid-Con play

Jed Jones is a leader of Gentlemen and Ladies, but what the Centenary men's and women's soccer coach really wants to do is blaze a trail - one that begins with a run at the Mid-Continent Conference championships.

"I want to be the first one to win the conference (title)," Jones said during Tuesday's soccer/volleyball media day at the Gold Dome. "That's my thought for Centenary College and that's what we've told our athletes - we want to be the first. We have some very hungry upperclassmen on both the men's and women's side so I think it's very possible that we can do that."

One of those hungry upperclassmen is men's goalkeeper Stefan Nicola, a native of Germany who is playing his final season with the team.

"We have a chance to have a really good season," Nicola said. "I think we have a good chance to win the conference and reach the NCAA Tournament."

Nicola and the Gents open their season at the IUPUI Tournament in Indianapolis and will travel to the Memphis Tournament and play a pair of games in DeLand, Fla., before beginning Mid-Con play at Western Illinois on Sept. 17. Eight days later, the Gents will play their first home conference game against IUPUI at 7 p.m. at Mayo Field.

Part of the reason for Nicola and Jones' optimism stems from a familiarity with some of their new conference opponents and the successes the Gents had in their years as an Independent.

"We found a way to win when it was harder for us to win because there was nothing at the end of the tunnel for us," Jones said. "We motivated the young adults when there wasn't something to play for and now there's a conference championship to play for. Now the motivation is going to be internal and I believe they will flourish because there is something to play for."

Jones, who said his goal is a top-four conference finish for both the men's and women's teams, and the Ladies open their season on Aug. 29 against Northern Iowa in El Paso, Texas, and will play their inaugural Mid-Con game on Sept. 12 at home against Western Illinois.

Head volleyball coach Jenny Hazelwood also has reason to be eager for what will happen on Sept. 26 - the date the Ladies play host to Valparaiso in the team's first Mid-Con match.

"It's going to be nice to have a home-court advantage for our first conference match," Hazelwood said. "But before that we'll have a couple of challenging matches that will help get us prepared for conference play."
