Subject: Southland lands TV deal, Mid-Con next?

Southland Conference commissioner lands TV deal
Brian Vernellis / The Times
Posted on August 1, 2003

DALLAS - Tom Burnett became the Southland Conference's sixth commissioner just before the start of 2003. In seven months, he's already expanded the conference's recognition.

The 40th year of the Southland Conference began on Thursday with its 2003 Kickoff Celebration in Dallas and a major announcement.

Seventeen of the conference's regular-season games will be broadcast through four networks - Fox Sports Southwest, College Sports Television, The Football Network and Cox Sports Television.

Northwestern State fans can watch seven of the Demons' 12 games.

"The hope is over a four to five-year period, we have a substantial television package each year," Burnett said. "Ultimately, the coaches can utilize it when they go out and recruit. They can get better student-athletes, make get better teams and we become a better conference."

Burnett's diverse background helps in his vision for the conference.

He spent nearly 13 years with the Sun Belt conference producing television deals, working in the communications department, developing marketing techniques and even working with officiating programs.

The television deal for football is just the beginning, he said. His main goal is to increase the visibility of Southland's basketball programs.

He's quick to point out, other than Northwestern State which won the play-in game a few seasons ago, Karl Malone's Louisiana Tech was the last Southland team to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

Football and basketball are just beginning. He also wants to see the conference rank among the top 15 in each of its sports.

Burnett also plans better media exposure for the conference, particularly with its 40th anniversary.

"We have to do a better job of putting ourselves in front of the media," he said. "We've got some great stories. There have been some great players in this conference. I can remember games from years ago, but I can't remember what color my socks were yesterday."

His short-term memory may be hazy, but there's no question Burnett is looking to a bright future for the Southland Conference.

"The membership in this conference has made it possible for someone to come in and do some good things like expand the television coverage and be open to ideas," Burnett said. "They've given me that opportunity.

"Our schools want to do good things and be successful. They want to do it within their financial means and the rules of conference and the NCAA."

Isn't the M-C too spread out to be attractive to regional Fox Sports?

Well don't you think games like IUPUI at Valpo, Valpo at Oakland, Valpo at Oral Roberts, IUPUI at Oakland, etc. Whatever the best games are (with great attendance) that will represent the conference well, should be on Fox Sports.

I know that that the Mid-Con has a Fox Sports deal that puts on six games right now (4 regular season games, men's semi-finals and women's finals), but the best games are the ones that should really be on TV. Maybe the new commish will help change this theory.

It is really a shame that the school with the best overall attendance (ORU) the last few years has not had a home game on TV. Why is that?

Do you think the Big 10 or SEC would do that?

It hasn't happened because of the Nazi-Valpo stranglehold the former commissioner had on the league. Every decision was made to benefit Valpo. They have been running scared from ORU since we joined the league. Maybe the new commish will help the situation. It couldn't get any worse!

I'm excited about the new commissioner. Early on, he seems to want to be very active and that he doesn't mind working hard.

I love the fact that his main priority is exposure.

I think the old commissioner tried to make everyone happy instead of rewarding the schools that deserve the perks.

Some of the games the Mid-Con put on Fox Sports should not have been on TV for anyone to see how bad the league can be. The premier games should be the only ones that get any national/regional TV exposure.

Valparaiso, Oakland, Oral Roberts and Southern Utah home games.

It seems to me that if every move was with Valpo in mind, that all 4 games would have featured Valpo. Instead all 8 Mid-Con teams were shown on TV. How exactly does that favor Valpo? Your jealously is showing big time here.

I agree that the best games, with decdent crowds should be televised. That means games at Valpo or ORU. IUPUI or Oakland only when Valpo comes to town. SUU can have a decent crowd but they are too quiet.

That comment was TOTALLY a joke. I was just trying to see if any Centenary people would join the fray. A bait to see if there was anyone from Louisiana surfing here.

You know my posts enough to realize I'm not that bitter.

Heard this from some guy who knows Chi-Man's uncle's cousin's brother-in-law so it must be good info. The new Mid-Con commissioner's, nephew's next-door neighbor once applied to Valpo. Will the connections between the Mid-Con commissioner's office and Valpo never end?

There is NO connection between the new commish and anybody at Valpo.
