Who's next
Thursday: at Valparaiso 7:05 p.m.
Feb. 14: at Western Illinois 4 p.m.

Record: 13-8, 6-4 Mid-Con.

Last week's results:

Lost to Missouri-Kansas City 77-71 on Jan. 31.

Lost in double-overtime to IUPUI 104-96 on Thursday.

A logjam: ORU might have lost its best chance to win the regular-season Mid-Con title. Now, the Eagles have to guard against losing everything else.

The immediate goal is to secure the highest possible seed in the postseason tournament. Seven teams are bunched within 2 1/2 games of first place.

Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (7-3) has the league lead and one of the more favorable closing schedules, but the Jaguars play Saturday at Southern Utah (4-5), which has already beaten the Jags in Indianapolis.

ORU has three of its last six at home and could still win the regular-season title, but would lose any tiebreaker with IUPUI for the top seed in the tournament because the Jags swept the season series.

The Eagles' best chance hinges on winning their next game Thursday at Valparaiso, where they haven't won in seven previous visits. Valpo (7-4) plays Saturday at Chicago State (5-4).

Missing ingredient: Josh Atkinson ranks fifth in career 3-pointers (189) for the Golden Eagles, but made just four in the previous six games before hitting three straight in the second half against IUPUI.

A career 38-percent shooter from behind the arc, Atkinson had made just four of his previous 38. His 15 points against IUPUI left him three shy of 1,000 for his career.

Putting it mildly: Many officiating calls went against the Eagles on Thursday night, none bigger than the foul away from the ball on freshman center Caleb Green with 1:42 left in the second overtime.

"It was unfortunate," coach Scott Sutton said, using guarded words.

It was also the last turning point. Leading by two, IUPUI reclaimed the ball and made it 101-96 on Akeem Clark's three-point play.

Briefly: ORU's previous back-to-back conference home losses were more than three years ago, against the same schools -- IUPUI and Missouri-Kansas City, on Jan. 18 and Jan. 27, 2001. . . . Through games of Feb. 1, Ken Tutt led the nation's freshmen with 64 3-pointers. He had five more against IUPUI.
