This one made me laugh.

When I was finishing high school in NL, my mother threw a party--"Cavalcades of Stars" I called them growing up--and she went to the neighborhood kaasboer (cheesemonger) to get a whole mess of sliced cheese to make a whole mess of sandwiches.

To make a long story short, the guy wouldn't sell them to her. He would only allow her a small amount, otherwise, he told her, "they would dry out".

Now, of course, you can walk into any Albert Heijn in NL and buy as much sliced kaas--prepackaged no less--as you want.

Capitalism is a wonderful thing.
