I say go with the boom furler. Hell grab the whole lot of modern shit. That way you will have take on another job and experiencing the nuances of sailing won't be an issue.

But seriously, I am a bit confused. My first thought is that if the wind is high why not just get that second reef tucked in to keep your speed down. But are you trying to lower your mainsail while going downwind? I can't imagine any system not getting hung up in the track or on the shrouds. Not to mention the mainsail going over the side.

If you are trying to drop the mainsail upwind that should be a piece of cake. The main should come down with just a tug. Maybe add a little spray lube to the slugs and track.

But it seems like I must be missing something. Would you be willing to give a bit more details on what your situation is?
