You're friends will love their boat. As far as the wooden rudder is concerned I honestly don't know much about it. I have a newer glass over wood rudder that was put in place by the previous owner when he pulled the A-4 and glassed over the prop aperture.

I think all boats sail better sans engine, but maybe you should try and convince them to pull the stink pot by telling them how much money they'll save by not having to fool with that thing. $$$ is always a huge consideration when getting an old boat back into shape.
