the voice of inexperience here, but when I abnchored on a lee shore, I realized that I should have tossed an anchor out while I aproached to give me a way to kedge out later.
If you get into the habbit of tossing anchor on your aproach, then leaving the line slack, (but not enough to foul ruddeer, et. cet.) the chain would lie on the bottom until you winch in so as not to obstruct traffic by the end of your dock.
Winching in to the anchor would swing your bow out to set you up to reach off the dock.
