Subject: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To The Yacht Club

"Yacht Club" this conjures up images, some bad, some good etc. For a Sailor, I picture sailing and old salts who are gold mines of information concerning world cruising etc. I was asked to join a 'prestigious' local yacht club and we had a month to decide whether it was a 'fit. Due to a paperwork snafu, it slid to about two. During this time I've met some nice people - one or two 'salts' and for the most part, it was a place to go drink, cook on the grill and hang-out. Nice location, big book rack. It really had everything, except for the one things I was looking for - sailing , especially with emphasis upon hands-on siling with an eye toward cruising.

So - when I learned 'no live aboards' allowed at the YACHT club docks... well, that was my 'Ah Ha!' moment (yes, I can be a little slow) that this was a very nice SOCIAL club with a "Bay" theme. It is not a sailing club with shipmates. I noticed that the few cruisers in the club kept as far away from the in house politics and general events as possible - odd.... I accordance with the rules and the day before my 'vote' into membership by the board, I communicated my desired to retract my membership application and thanked them genuinely for considering me.

Naturally, you know that it was all hand shakes and hugs...... suuuuure Ray - NO not really, in all actuality, you would think that I crapped in their 2007 regatta prize bowl (not a bad idea, but not tonight...) So - it seems that the cost of friendship is roughly $2000/year, plus 'activity fees' or I can buy the latest Airbreeze wind genny with mount and still have the better part of $1100 left over...

Wow - well, the good news is that my ACTUAL dock mates - you know - those who love DOING the water life - they still pour drinks for me, so I guess that this tells me that water people are likely the best 'mates I can find. Too bad though, there was a lot that I could have been done at the yacht club. My old SSB/antenna coupler would have gone nicely in their club house so that we could keep track of all the club members on the high seas. As it is - they just use cell phones - since everyone's in range.... I'll likely trade it at the chandlery for a good barometer and used stove.

Haaar! Back to the old formula:

"You ARE what you DO."

I need to sail more, because I already know how to talk and drink.
