It is very sad news I learned today that Jeff Lind passed away 2 weeks ago at home in Chicago. Despite the below funeral announcement, I would have thought people would have mentioned it, but it was a private ceremony. Still, that is no reason Jeff should not be remembered by all of us for his understated and modest professionalism as a journalist, friend and good guy.
I met Jeff some time in the 80's. I KNEW of Jeff long before through his Illinois Entertainer articles on Chicago rock in the late70's/early 80's. When I first got this incredible collection of Chicago music material from my good friend and fellow Chicago music collector, George Paetzmann, I had no idea such a mountain of material I would love had been assembled by anyone. I was of the belief that only a handful of friends even remembered the 60's Chicago music scene. Well before I ever thought of working on music projects for others, I just collected everything on Chicago 60's music, but Jeff's material was priceless. I had no idea anyone could actually INTERVIEW obscure (yet stars to me) artists 20 years later! How would they find these people? Jeff knew, because, like so many I have met since, he LIVED it! He had tapes, pictures and knew many of these people back in their heyday! Soon, we were trading tapes and photos and such. Other than a call or two (something I am sad I did not do more now), we usually communicated through packages and letters.
Most recently (a month ago?), Jeff sent me a 4 page letter and a CDR of obscure music and a want list I was supposed to fill for him. That is how it worked early on, but I have been very lapse lately ever since the computer entered my being in 2000. I responded occasionally since 2000, but nothing like I should have. IF he had been on the interent, he would be alive today. I think he would have had more friends than I have found because of his wealth of knowledge--and I have alot that I thank God for every day!
Jeff's information he shared, whether written or on tape or pictures, helped me immensely on EVERY Chicago 60's project I ever worked on. Most of the people reading this note will feel the same, even if they never met him! Many will have been interviewed by him over the years and I may jog a particular memory. If so, I would love to hear them.
IF you had any interest or feeling for Chicago radio and music in the 60's, you owe Jeff a debt of gratitude for keeping this music alive and it will continue to live in his memory for decades to come.
For those who did not know Jeff, he had health problems for some time, but a great sense of humor. He would send me pictures that would make me laugh. He was always dressed in some way to make a person smile. 61 years old, but really just LIVING in the 60's. He and I and many of you out there wish we could return to many of those magic moments when we were kids and the music took us away. Jeff gave us the opportunity to do just that time and time again with his Entertainer articles and music work. I will miss Jeff Lind. I will miss his friendship and his thoughts on subjects that touched us all. Jeff, my friend, rest in peace.
Your friend, Clark Besch
