I think the public here in Britain just wasn't ready to take Kylie at face value as some kind of 'indie' artist, as deconstruction were trying to promote her. Obviously, some people bought the notion of an 'indie Kylie' because the album did get to #10, but it sold considerably less than previous albums. Which is a shame, as it really was an excellent album - her best bar "Light Years" in my opinion.

BTW, Neil Rees - sorry, but you are wrong about the Australian chart position. IP got to #4 in Australia, not #1. Still, it did much better in Australia than it did in Britain. As well as achieving a higher chart position, it charted for months in Australia, as opposed to just a few weeks in the UK.
