Scud to resume career with visit to India

Mark Philippoussis will bypass the first week of the Australian circuit, and ignore the Adelaide event where he launched his previous comeback with a finals appearance this year, to resume his interrupted career in India, in January.

Philippoussis, who has resumed practising in San Diego after his latest knee scare at the United States Open in August, confirmed his entry into the Madras event.

"I am really looking forward to playing in India," Philippoussis said. "Hopefully I can get a good start to the new year."

Colin Stubs, the tournament director of Adelaide's hardcourt championships, said he believed the main lure for the unseeded Philippoussis was the weaker field in the Indian tournament and the chance to ease back into tournament play.

"I guess in an ideal world we would have liked to have had him back at Adelaide, and, I think if things had gone along well in terms of his knee, I thought we would have had him back in Adelaide," Stubs said. "But having said that, I understand the rationale."

Meanwhile, a local presence on men's final day at the Australian Open will not be contingent on the success of top seed Lleyton Hewitt. Confirmation came yesterday that the championship decider will be preceded by a ceremony inducting Pat Cash into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame.

As revealed in The Age earlier this month, an at-times strained relationship with Tennis Australia has not blocked Cash's election as the 25th hall-of-famer, 15 years after his Wimbledon success, and the requisite five years after his retirement.

"My relationship with Tennis Australia hasn't always been good over the years and it's nice to be able to start afresh now that I'm back in Australia, and to work on building the future of tennis in Australia together," said Cash, the first player to be recognised from the modern professional era.

Now aged 37, Cash lives on the Gold Coast, where he has established a tennis academy.

Overseas, Russian No. 3 seed Marat Safin slumped to a 7-6, 7-6 second-round defeat to Argentinian Agustin Calleri at the Madrid Masters.

Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero also struggled, but survived. Moya, the eighth seed, was given a pounding by the powerful Chilean Fernando Gonzalez and had to save a matchpoint before clinching a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) victory.

Ferrero, seeded fifth, was pushed all the way by Finland's Jarkko Nieminen in a 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5 success. There was no such escape for Gustavo Kuerten, who was hustled out 6-4, 6-4 by Thai Paradorn Srichaphan.

In Zurich, Kim Clijsters, fresh from victory in Filderstadt, kicked off her Swisscom Challenge tournament with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic.
